Hello All,

We are planning to have our Python User Group Meetup - Tech Sessions
coming up on March 2nd of 2012 (Friday) at Hackerspace.

Usually we have once in 3 month meetup, but on certain occasions we
have pure tech sessions, which are just extreme tech talks and we
share technology updates usually by local members or important
speakers from outside. So, here the plan for 2nd of March Meetup.

Hmmmm...

I will most probably be totally burned out and jet lagged (coming back from Germany on Thursday). But then again I missed so many Python user groups that I would be a fool if I missed this one as well.

While I would love to give an introductory talk to Django, I don't think that I will have the time to prepare anything so that it fits into a 45 minutes talk.

But I would have another idea:

I could give an introduction to
  • virtualenv and virtualenvwrapper (although I assume that everyone in the audience will already know about it, so I might just skip that)
  • how to use ipython and ipdb for debugging
  • how to setup vim as a full blown Python IDE in 5 minutes
Somehow this would fit the "introductory" style of the talks, wouldn't it? Setting up an IDE would be the first thing a new Python programmer would want to do, after all.

I would show how to add a nice color scheme, add line numbers and a 70 char marker, how to use and configure the python-mode plugin which gives all kinds of awesomeness like code completion, pylint checking, syntax highlighting and go to definition. I have it all in a github repository, so attendants should be able to reproduce everything with just a few lines of terminal commands.

Would anyone be interested in this? I would really love to share this, it changed my life a few months ago :)

Best regards,
Martin

Hey Martin,

I'm in the midst of preparing a talk on introductory natural language processing with NLTK (silly me, replied in the Facebook page but forgot to reply here). But nonetheless, feel free to go ahead if you wish to talk about your topics :D

By the way, welcome back!

Victor,

sorry for not checking Facebook, my bad!

It's OK, please go ahead with your talk, it's a topic that I am highly interested in and it would probably much better for my stress level to just lean back and listen instead of giving a talk.

Just in case I will bring my machine and be prepared to give my talk if you should fall sick or so. I can still talk about the magic of vim next month :)

Looking forward to seeing you on Friday!

Best regards,
Martin

Woah - hold on Martin. Please continue with your talk.

I am not falling sick, but due to some family commitments I need to make a short overseas trip this Friday to Sunday.

Apologies! I will talk about NLTK next month instead.

Both Martin's and Victor's topics are very interesting, but I have
more experience with virtualenv and am jonesing for more knowledge on
NLTK!

Anyone want to grab a bite to eat before the Python meetup? That way
we can stay for beermates.js

Hi,

So I have the Hackerspace website with the address: http://hackerspace.sg/about-us/

Is there anything else I need to know to find the place?

Thanks,
Michael

@Owen I would like to have a snack before, especially because I will have to leave right after my talk. What time and place do you have in mind?

Cheers,
Martin

@martin I'm happy to go some place close like Amirah's, Blu Jaz or the
coffee shop on the corner.
