Hi
The Mozilla Pune community would like to give a talk on how to contribute to the Mozilla Project. This is a great idea because Mozilla is using Python in a great many areas(and hence, help is needed in all those areas):
  • Mozilla's web-dev team uses (an abstraction over) Django for all the Mozilla websites.
  • Mozilla India is going to move to a Python stack (so there's a lot of help needed here).
  • Mozilla's generic build tool, Mach, is written in Python. This can be a great project for serious Python hackers.
  • All the automation is done using Python.

This talk will help both people new to the FOSS world and old contributors who have not jumped into the Mozilla codebase to start working on a real world project using their favourite programming language. Contributing to an Open Source project is one of the best ways to learn a language. And most of all, it is great to have the feeling that your code is part of a product used by millions of people worldwide.

With the April meetup less than a week away, let us do a quick headcount to gauge the interest in this talk? Reply with your opinions.

Regards

Brilliant idea. Would love to attend the meeting and contribute to Mozilla.

Yati,

This is indeed a very good idea. We could have it after the two existing talks. Right now I have the room booked form 5:30pm to 8:00 pm. The two talks are from 5:30 - 7:30, which gives you about 1/2 and hour. But we could extend that a bit more to 8:30 if you would like to have it a one hour session.

Another option would be to have a completely separate session. This could be a more elaborate session probably with folks being trained how to work out things, probably fix bugs etc.

That is also a nice idea - we can have a short intro during the meetup and a day long(or half a day long) bug-solving session later. Maybe we should wait till Thursday or so to see if there's enough interest for such an event and we can plan it out then.

Currently, the Mozilla India site runs on Drupal, unlike other Mozilla sites. We are working to port it to the Playdoh/Bedrock stack - which are basically wrappers over Django. I think it should have been "The Mozilla India site..." just "Mozilla India...".

*wrappers on top of the Django project-structure, bedrock being a playdoh project itself.

Not sure if there will be enough time after two existing sessions.
Generally sessions tend to spillover the allotted time as it is.

I prefer a separate session where sufficient time can be devoted for the topic.

+1 for the session.

I too think that a separate session for the same would be a better idea. After two sessions, people kind of lose attention.

Thanks
