Hi,

Anyone interested in organising Python meetups / talks in Galway? The
main question is if there are people who would want to meet up, listen
to and present talks. DERI [1] could provide the venue.

There are also some other regular tech or social media events taking
place in Galway such as LUG meetups, Open Coffee, etc.

P.S. Would it make sense to start a wiki page for organising Galway
meetups? I am new to the Python Ireland community hence do not know
what are the best practices you use to coordinate such events.

I'd be willing to attend one if it were on a weekend.

Umm Best Practices....

Pick a date, get a venue, starting small is probably wise, just announce
a meeting with no set agenda talks in a pub. Mail mailing lists where
python programmers in galway are likely to hang out (ilug.ie worked well
for me, Im sure Galway has some sort of compsoc in the university.)

Turn up and wait for people, bring a sign to stick on a pub table so
people who turn up know who you are. Let us know about your meeting and
we will stick it up on python.ie . Stick it on all the sites like
upcoming etc you can find. Then turn up and see if anyone shows.

Do something every month, even if its just going to the pub. Every
month. Under no circumstances take a break for Christmas. Once you have
a gang of people turning up to the pub, suggest giving talks and see
what people would like to talk about. Things will take care of
themselves from there.

Good luck

+1 on what Sean said, "Under no circumstances take a break for Christmas"!

You can ping the Python Ireland list on your meet-ups. You can also tweet with @pythonireland in it, and/or let me know, I can tweet about it as pythonireland.

Also, I have other places you can announce your meet-ups, traffic is sort of low in these groups though:-

Others to consider on top of upcoming:-

The best place is this google group mailing list. :)

Oh, if it's on a weekend, I should be able to make it as well. I'll bring along t-shirts, stickers, biz cards and posters.

Good luck,

Vicky

Hi All,

The idea for Python Galway meetups is still live.

Sorry for the long silence, though. I am writing up my PhD thesis and
have very little time for other things. This does not make me the best
candidate for organising meetups as I may be leaving for another
location once finished writing. But I will do my share of helping
organise meetups and participating in them while I am here in Galway.

Therefore looking for one or more persons here who would be willing to
organise the event: set the time & place, announce it, etc. Please
respond if you are interested.

We can do the 1st meetup in the pub, just to meet up and have a chat.
It can be interesting even if just 2 or 3 people are there. What about
meeting this or the next Saturday, in the afternoon (between 1pm and
3pm)?

The other type of meetups is talks. Our institute can provide the
venue w. a conference room, a wifi network and a beamer. If that
sounds OK we can use the wiki and this mailing list to set the time
and date. It would be good to have a larger number of people in a
meetup with talks.

P.S. Could someone give me wiki edit access? My account name is CaptSolo.

I can arrange announcements like posting up on the python list, facebook, etc. since I organise most of the meet ups in Dublin.

Setting up the venue will have to someone who's local in Galway, prob easiest.

Just remember to CC me when you have information, I'll spam, I mean, I'll post about it in the relevent places online.

For Mick (Twomey) and I, we'll be at EuroPython all week, so won't make it. Oh, we don't really use the wiki that much, as we are in the midst of re-doing the python.ie site (I'm a bit preoccupied with this new house moving thingy atm).

But, if you still want to post to wiki, Mick (Twomey) will give you access, and the current python.ie site, ask Sean O'Donnell to post up meet up information and dates.

It would be nice to have talks in Galway, encourage more people to go (from all over Ireland, okay, from Dublin).

Regards,

/// Vicky

PS: If you want tips on organising a local meet up, don't hesistate to ask us (or me).

Hi Uldris,

As Vicky said, once you have a meetup organized give me a heads up and
ill make sure it goes up on python.ie (take a look at the event listed
right now to get an idea of what we usually put up).

Good luck, and don't be discouraged if you don't get many people first
time. When I got Python Ireland off the ground I considered 3 a good
turnout for the first 6 months, and spent a few nights in the pub on my
own. persistence is the key.

Thanks for all the info, will organise a Galway Python meetup this
Saturday. Will post information about it shortly.

It seemed a good idea to wait with the Galway meetup until people are
back from the conference, too.
How was EuroPython? Any highlights?

Cosmin, my colleague from DERI, gave this presentation at EuroPython:
