Hi Folks,

With 13 banned automated "spam" members in the last 7 days, it seems we have a new trend. Perhaps it's time to moderate the first one or two posts from new members after all.

What do you think? Anyone strongly agree or disagree?

Aye, it seems the sanctuary of google groups has been breached by more
spammers. I'm for moderation if its easy to do. However, they are
rather amusing...

Hi Tim,

Unfortunately the Belfast LUG learned the hard way that the only sane
way to run a Google Group is with new member moderation turned on, and
with file upload access explicitly turned off. We got our group banned
for several days because someone joined and uploaded a junk file.

If you assign a few group managers, moderating first posts isn't all
that much work at all..

Sound advice.

The spam will only get worse over time. I think moderating now isn't a
bad idea.

Hello everybody,

As long as there are not many people joining the group every day, IMHO
it's better to tackle the problem before it becomes bigger, so
+1 for moderation of the first message.

You can always ask for more help.
Willing, if needed.

On the BLUG group we've found it works quite well and provided there
are a couple of people moderating its not a huge deal for those doing
the actual moderating.

Talk to you soon,
Take care,

If it happens twice, it's a feature.
If it happens more than twice, it's a design philosophy.

Sean is in charge of the list, he'll be able to tweak the settings for the mailing list.

Thanks for the many replies and opinions. Since nobody spoke out against moderating new members and other groups seem to have been forced to do the same, I assume that it's OK with the majority on the list. Moderation of new member's first emails is now enabled. Hopefully spam will drop back to nothing :-)

Cheers,
