As seen in this thread
http://groups.google.com/group/python-excel/browse_thread/thread/765fea90b36ced55/d14e6fa1f6e9e449?lnk=gst&q=pyExcelerator+Protection+insert_bitmap#d14e6fa1f6e9e449
(I couldn't respond to that thread, which is why I'm making a new
post)

Doesn't appear that this issue has been fixed yet. The example script
https://secure.simplistix.co.uk/svn/xlwt/tags/pyExcelerator/examples/image.py
doesn't seem to work with open office or with gnumeric.

Doesn't work with xlwt or pyexcelerator. Is there documentation
available on Esher layer?

Has anyone opened up a bug with either the OOo bug tracker or the
gnumeric bug tracker?

That's correct. Nobody seems to have been sufficiently agitated by the
issue to volunteer to fix it.

I think you misunderstand the issue. xlwt/pyExcelerator works as
advertised -- a bitmap image is inserted in the file. Excel can
display this. OOo Calc and Gnumeric can't/won't.

See http://www.microsoft.com/interop/docs/officebinaryformats.mspx

I haven't. There's a reasonable presumption that neither OOo nor
Gnumeric would be interested in supporting an antique format. MS
aren't so wild about it either; IIRC, if you open a file with a bitmap
image in Excel and save it, the image is rewritten in the new format.

I filed a bug on launchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/255876
And it appears there are bugs already tracking this for openoffice
(duplicates probably), as I noted in the above linked bug report.

I didn't check about gnumeric.

You'd probably get more joy by reporting it in the OOo tracker:

http://qa.openoffice.org/issue_handling/pre_submission.html

..rather than the downstream Ubuntu tracker.

cheers,

Chris
