Subject: Locations is everything

The question is where should we organize events ?

PUN, Python Users Nederland are organizing their events in different cities
each time.
source: http://wiki.python.org/moin/PUN/
It seems that it depends on the host who is organizing the event.

I'm found of this way of working, maybe it will be hard in the beginning to
find different organizers for each different location.
But the idea of having meet-ups in different cities sure seems more
reasonable then having one city for each event.
We don't all live near Ghent or Brussels for example.

How do you see this, do you know good places that are inexpensive or maybe
(let's dream) free ?
Do you work at a company that might be able to sponsor us by letting us use
their offices to organize our events ?
Where do you all live ?

I'm from Oudenaarde, that's near Ghent.

Regards,

Jonas.

I'm from Lens, near Mons (Hainaut).

An option for meetings might be to contact the Microsoft (yes, I know)
Innovation Centers (there is one in Mons and one in Brussels, maybe one in
the Dutch region). I think they provide infrastructure to host events...

Well, 'they' do IronPython don't they? (green smile)

More seriously: Brussels seems to be the most central this far, and since
it's in the middle of the country we can never go wrong with Brussels. On
the other hand, I'm not sure if the first meeting should be something
everyone should attend; people that really want to help run the usergroup
should however. Is everyone here so far in this category? Me myself, I
would like to but I'm not sure how much time gets involved in running a UG.
So my idea is that I'd go to a first meeting, see how that goes and then
decide if:
1) people want me in
2) what my role could be
3) see how much resources (time) is needed to fulfill this responsibility

Hello,

I am not sure asking Microsoft for a place is a good idea...

Why not asking Google, since Python founder Guido van Rossum is working
there? I think there are located in Mons as well.
Also, as one of the first founders of  Brussels Linux User Group, in the
past, we had rooms in university ( ULB and VUB ) to organize periodic
events.
Have a nice pythonic day ;)

I can agree with having a first informal meeting in Brussels. It's our capital and the most central city.

Like Dries mentioned, I also think it should be a meeting with people who want to invest some time or resources in this UG. But then again, if you live close or don't mind to travel the distance, of course everyone is more then welcome. In any case the first meeting shouldn't be considered as an actual event, it's a meeting where we will discuss the first event.

If Microsoft is up for it and there are no other options I don't see why we shouldn't be using their resources. But indeed I believe there will be and must be other possibilities then contacting Microsoft for location and support.

I believe the VUB and ULB both have student groups who are related to informatics, maybe we can contact them and see what they can do for us ?

Should we setup a doodle or something to find a good date for our first meet-up ?

Regards,

Jonas.

Hi,

In the week I'm in Antwerp, in the weekends most of the time near Ghent.

This Friday I'm going to the PUN in Utrecht, one nice thing about most of
the PUN locations is that they are most of the time near a big railway
station so you don't wast time finding a parking spot and being social in
traffic jams.

Just got a tweet from Ludovic Gasc (organizer of afpyro - https://t.co/oapzxRZL) asking: we should make an event at Brussels together ?

Maybe we shouldn't only invite the people who want to actively contribute to this group but just everyone who cares or wants to be there ? It will quickly become clear who's in for becoming a more active member , not ?

Let's not forget one of Yannick Gingras 7 points:  Work with other user groups.

To me this sounds like a good idea.

Jonas.

I think we can already make some interesting list

Locations
=======

About the thread we can already see some interesting locations:

- Brussels (which interests also pyFR/afpyro)
- Ghent (Waregem, Kortrijk, Oudenaarde, ...)
- Antwerp (Mol ?)
- Mons/Bergen (Lens, ...)
- Leuven could also be an interesting location, but I don't know anyone on
the list yet originating from there or the neighborhood

Mol is a bit harder, but maybe that's close enough to Antwerp?

Hi,

I'm the organizer of Python drinks in Belgium (
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!forum/afpyro-be ) we are
20-30 by event, except for EuroSciPy, we were +80 :-)
http://afpy.ro/dates/2012/2012_08_24.html

I'm a french speaking person, for now, we only go to a Wallonia city or
Brussels. I really want to do a multilingual event at Brussels to permit
all Belgium Pythonistas discuss together and promote Python.

I propose to organize a common drink at Brussels.

Usually, I launch a doodle before the event to determine the best date for
the interested people, I should launch this survey with the 3 languages.

What's your opinion ?

Regards.

In Mons, they only have a data center. BUT they have an office in Brussels:

*Google Belgium n.v.*
Chaussée d’Etterbeek 176-180
Etterbeeksesteenweg 176-180
1040 Brussels

So that might be an option.

I'm a Python developer myself and founder of a small startup using Python

location for an event I can help search near Brussels were some customers
(quite large companies) are located.

My suggestion is to start a few events eventually organized by a company
(sponsoring) Once everything gets up en running and gets enough attraction
you can go through the setup of  VZW.

FYI :   I'm located near ghent.

Hello Follow Pythonistas,

I think I might have found our first meeting place.

The company I work for (Adagio) has good relations with Clearhout nv Communications. My boss was very found of the idea of pyBug and told me he will make it happen for us to use their meeting room for free.

Also the company I work for will be sponsoring (drinks, food and accommodation) the first event. I still need to sit down with him to talk over the details but, I said this will be best done after 26 october.

It's a brand new building location about 1km from the train station in Ghent and next to the R4 and other highways (E17 and E40)

To give you an idea what the place looks like: http://www.communicatiehuis.be/BENL/assets/12846s_2COHUs.jpg

Cheers,

Jonas.

Hi Jonas,

The place seems to be great, but normally this meeting is for Afpyro and
pybug, I prefer to have the event at Brussels, because almost attendees of
Afpyro live in Wallonia, easier for them to go to Brussels.

You should make the next meeting of pybug at this place, shouldn't you?

I know I'm on late, I will publish officially the event tomorrow.

Regards.

Hi,

Sorry, I've misread your e-mail.

About the meal, depends on the number of attendees.
If we are a small group, I know several interesting restaurants, but if we
are a lot, the plan will be to eat at Léon: http://uk.chezleon.be/
They have always enough places and the meal is ok.
