Just trying to see if anyone knows?

I just realized that TravisCI is downloading packages from pypi at each run.

does this count in the pypi download statistic?

That could inflate the numbers pretty much, if other packages have a
package as dependency.

TravisCI is downloading zip files, which might explain some of the zip
file dominance for example for patsy

but we are not doing anything remotely like 16000 travis jobs, so in
percentages it's still small, I guess
pip install also uses zip files (at least on windows)

Mac users also get the zip AFAIK.
