I mentioned this last night, a cheap standing desk that sits on top of
a standard desk. It's a great way to try a good-looking standing desk
without committing and without spending much money – about $30 in
parts from Ikea and hardware (nuts, bolts, washers). The only tool
needed is a drill, although a drill-press makes for a neater job.
The original idea, with assembly instructions:

Mine uses bolts (#10 x 3.5”) instead of screws, with wing nuts &
fender washers, since the legs are made of square pressboard tubing
(strong vertically, not so strong horizontally, e.g. when squeezed in
the middle). 3” bolts might be OK if they have flat heads – the
brackets have counter-sunk holes. I could only find round head bolts,
so I used small washers on the front so the bolt heads would sit
right. Also, I drilled 5 sets of holes for adjustment.
A user’s perspective, with some good ideas:

I use an anti-fatigue mat from Menard’s, $15 (4 colorful interlocking
squares, 2x1 stacked 2 high). Definitely not as good as the one the
above article recommends, but cheap.
(Cheap is important to me, as I may have to leave this behind when my
project ends and I return to Montreal.)
