Pychess in Ubuntu Gutsy crashes after program start

The version of pychess that is in the Ubuntu Gutsy repositories,
crashes directly after starting with the following error message:

TypeError: GtkContainer.add() argument 1 must be gtk.Widget, not None

Does anyone know what causes this and can you perhaps add a comment or
even a patch to the bug report here:
