Pioneer Valley Folklore Society Happenings -- April 2012
Musician-songwriter Don Dixon will join April 7 Song & Story Swap
Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the Pioneer Valley
Folklore Society Song & Story Swap.
Saturday, April 7, 7:00 p.m. at the The Nacul Center, 592 Main St., Amherst,
Mass (see map).
Guest performer for the April 7 Song & Story Swap will be versatile Don
Dixon.
Don Dixon has enjoyed a rich and varied career as a performer, producer and
songwriter.
He grew up in Lancaster, South Carolina and played Cole Porter songs in a
tuxedo-clad combo called the Cavaliers while in high school. He later
recorded major-label albums with a rock band called Arrogance. As a producer
he was behind seminal albums by R.E.M., the Smithereens and Marti Jones.
He scored an MTV hit with Praying Mantis and released a string of
clever-soulful solo albums. A book of his song lyrics, Songs 101: the Lyrics
of Don Dixon was released in 2009.
Dixon's acting ability has been demonstrated in a starring role in an
off-Broadway musical, King Mackerel and the Blues Are Running. He played an
embittered alcoholic Broadway composer in an underground hit indie film,
Camp, and most recently has been touring as bass player with longtime friend
Mary Chapin Carpenter.
