Hi there singers - we had a fun RUSH on Sunday, up in the barn at
Stan and Joanna's place, with some new faces and some familiar ones.
We were having such a good time that we forgot to leave until an
hour past the time Stan had invited us for. But I think he forgave
us for that anyway, kind soul.
So - we have dates scheduled for November and December, for you to
put on your calendars! In November, back we come to the Pelham
Community Center where we have had large and boisterous RUSH
gathering a couple of times. That will be on Sunday afternoon, with
singing FIRST! from 4 to 6, and then an optional potluck, and then
more singing after that if folks are still in the mood. (To tell
the truth one of my favorite parts of the RUSH gatherings is when we
are down to the Hard Core of singers who just can't stop!) The
Pelham Community Center is in the same building as the library,
about 4 miles from the center of Amherst, and you can see how to get
there at http://sconant.net/rush/commctr.html.
Then, on Saturday December 12th we will be RUSHing over at the Rocky
Hill Cohousing Common House in Northampton, where we have met many
times thanks to Marci and Ben who live in that cohousing group. For
this one we will have the Saturday Traditional Form, with the
optional potluck at 6 and then singing from 7 until exhaustion sets
in. How to get there is explained in
http://sconant.net/rush/rockyhill.html.
The November RUSH may be the last for some time for Joy and John,
since in mid-December they are heading out of town on a big
adventurous trip. And since Joy and John have been Pillars of the
RUSH community for many years, it is with great gratitude that this
request and announcement from them is shared here on this list. The
charming house they mention has been the venue of RUSH several
times, so many of you know it:

Dear Friends:
John and I are now plunging ahead with planning and preparations for
our big cross-country trip in our 25-ft. travel trailer (which we
call "Quite Carried Away," after an English Country dance by that
name). We are expecting to leave Lake Pleasant soon, in
mid-December, not returning until mid-October of next year! We're
hoping for your assistance.
We'd like to rent out our house while we're gone, if we can find
someone who comes through personal recommendation, as all of our
furnishings and stuff will be here. Thus we're not comfortable
advertising it to the general public, but please let us know if
someone you know to be trustworthy might be interested in a lovely
spot at very reasonable rent. We're putting this word out now for a
10-month rental, starting mid-December, because we'll need to start
taking steps by early-to-mid November toward closing up the house if
we aren't able to find renters.
FYI, Lake Pleasant in Montague, near the Montague Book Mill. It is
15 mins. from Greenfield, 20-25 from Amherst, and 30 from
Northampton, and we'd be happy to consider grad students for spring
and summer sessions, but probably not undergrads. It would be
excellent for someone writing a book, or just in transition, etc.!
We're asking just $650/mo. rent, plus heat and utilities, which is
approximately half the going market value, since it's for a limited
time.)
The house is a two-story expanded Victorian cottage, named
Stillwaters by a former owner. It faces East onto the lake, has a
screened porch on the front and an open porch on the side, and has
washer and dryer and a dishwasher. It will be fully furnished.
There is no garage, but there is off street parking. It is adjacent
to Lake Pleasant's "Bridge of Names," the walking bridge across a
ravine, which connects the two halves of the village. On the other
side is a spiritualist temple, a remnant of Lake Pleasant's colorful
history, and the homey Lake Pleasant post office.
Other things important to keep in mind are that the house is small,
just comfortable for 1-2 adults. It is not a kid-safe house, and we
need to not have pets in the house due to allergy issues. Also
would definitely not want smoking in the house.
We'd ask that anyone who is interested contact us initially by
email, telling us a little about themselves and how they came across
our notice. Then we can answer questions and provide photos, if
that's of interest, or set up a time to see the house. For someone
who doesn't have email, our phone number is 413/367-0114.
Thanks so much,
Joy Kaubin and John Anderson

But that is not the only news to share. Another of our RUSH folks,
Sarah Pirtle, a well known and much loved singer in our region, is
giving a free concert, and inviting you to come! Here is her
announcement about it:
-----------
Next Saturday afternoon, October 24th, at Woolman Hill in Deerfield
I will be giving a concert of healing songs for young and old.
Time: 4 pm in the afternoon.
It is free and sponsored by the Community Crisis Response Team in
Greenfield.
The songs are for all ages. It's open to the public -- please let
people on your email address list know.
The concert will be in the Meetinghouse which is on the right as you
come up Woolman Hill, and not the conference house.
I'll be celebrating the release of two new recordings --
"Pocketful of Wonder" which has the "Fairy House" song and
"A Seed Knows What to Do." Also the adult CD -- Heart Wings.
The children's recording will be available for the first time.
Directions: in the North Deerfield section of route 5-10 near
Greenfield go to the turn (east) up Keets Road. That turn is between
the Wok restaurant outside of Greenfield (which you'll pass if you
are coming from Greenfield) and the entrances to Old Deerfield
(which you'll pass if coming from Amherst and Northampton). Drive
across the railroad tracks to the top of Keets Road.
I hope that you can come.
Warm wishes,
Sarah Pirtle
