Queens Birthday Weekend
May 30-June 1 2009 All levels of riding ability welcome. Public spectators welcome (no charge). There will be learner unicycles available to have a try on if you get inspired (we think you will!) [Programme updated 28 May 2009] Friday: Unofficial start 08:00-08:30 The Square: Local radio station having a competition on air to promote the event. UDC giving away a unicycle. Listen out for Jesse on More FM sometime during the day. 09:00 Skating Rink: Registration, Tee Shirt pickup [Steve / PuNi team] 09:30 Skating Rink: Small races: one foot, slow, backwards, hopping [Steve / Peter] 10:00 Velodrome: Big races: 100m, 200m, 1km, round the lake relay [Steve / Peter] 11:00 Skating Rink: Unicycle Hockey, sumo, bullrush [Steve / Malcolm] 12:00 Lunch- byo 13:00 Skating Rink: high jump, long jump [Steve / Peter] 14:00 10k race (see route description below) OR Street Comp at the skate park [Steve / Malcolm] 19:00: big screen DVDs and pizza at the Salvation Army Cafe, 99 Kaimanawa St. Also will have the NZ Uni AGM, Briefing on Unicon, and maybe a focus group (what Unicycle products would you like to see developed in the next 5 years?) [Tony / Steve / Lynne / Ken] Registered event participants only please: no public entry by request of the venue providers. TV3 Sports will be filming from approx 11am to 2pm, so make sure you get that haircut before you come (Ken is!). Tell your family to watch the news on Saturday night. 10k race route: depart Memorial Park carpark, turn left onto Main Street, turn left onto Albert Street. Go all the way to the river. Turn left and ride along the river bank until you come to a deep drain across the track. Turn left and come up the stop bank along the drain (you may need to go through a gate- do not cross the bridge and continue along the river bank). Turn left on Napier Road and return to Memorial Park (take care of traffic in first 100m of road as this is a 100km speed zone). Terrain is urban footpaths and gravel walking track. See the map below for details. Sunday: Trials / Street Day 09:00 Awapuni trials courses. Heaps of interesting rocks and lines to follow. [Tony / Steve] 11:30 Lunch in the Plaza food court (byo money!) 12:00 Plaza shopping mall: Flatland comp / public unicycle demo [Tony / Christian] 14:00 Guided Street ride incl the Square [Jesse / Dave] 19:30: Esplanade night ride (byo lights). Meet at the Caravan Park on Dittmer Drive to avoid having your car locked in. [Tony / Joe?] Riders need to wear safety equipment and be moderately experienced to enjoy the day: at minimum able to free mount and ride up and down a kerb Monday: MUni Day at Kahuterawa Loop 09:00 Meet at carpark for briefing. Allow 35 minutes to drive out from Palmerston North city. 09:30 Uphill race, downhill race, singletrail time trials, stream crossing comp (stay dry over 5 streams) 13:00 Several people returning to Palmerston North to catch flights at 2:30pm. Plenty to do in the park: stay as long as you like. Riders need to wear safety equipment and be moderately experienced to enjoy the day: at minimum able to free mount and ride up and down a kerb. Bring water and plenty of snack food because we will likely stay in the bush until mid afternoon if the weather is good. To get to Kahuterawa Loop: drive south down Fitzherbert Ave, across the bridge, past Massey University. Approx 5k out of town, turn left down Old West Road, then immediately turn right onto Kahuterawa Road. Drive approx 20 minutes up the valley, including a long dirt road section until you get to the very end of the road which is the start of the MTB tracks. Park in the carpark to avoid congestion. Optional 2 hour distance ride around Greens Road Loop, which is on the way out to K Loop. Ask Steve or Malcolm for directions. NZUni2009Poster.pdf [200Kb] Accommodation Palmerston North Holiday Park has tent / caravan sites and some nice cabins Braemar Motor Lodge is close to Memorial Park and the Terrace End shops Carramar Motor Inn is slightly further away by the hospital, but just as good. There is limited opportunity to pitch tents on the lawn at a few places around town. First in first served. Tee Shirts Orders have now closed.
