We've actually explored this for a potential member who's a minor. It shouldn't be a problem as long as she's 13 and you sign the waiver a her guardian. On Sep 5, 2011 10:09 AM, "Dan Krol" <orbliv...@gmail.com> wrote:

I've got a 10yr old and twin 5 yr olds... I've been looking forward to
bringing my 10 yr old in when she gets a bit older and have been
meaning to ask this very question. She's getting into Lego League big
time this year and I'd love to encourage that mindset through PS:1.
While bringing in the 5yr olds wouldn't be the best of ideas; would a
10 yr old under (extreme) supervision be allowed or even welcome?
I too would love to have the maker mentality and philosophy be
"normal" for her.

The official policy has been that every child needs a waiver signed in their name and that parents need to be present if they're under 13. The unofficial practice has been that since the safest areas for kids are the front lobby and the classroom (and definitely not the loft nor workshop), younger kids should probably stick to those parts, but in practice that part falls under parent discretion. You know your kids best (or should).
We've had kids as young as six participate in classes that involved soldering, but of course that was done entirely from the safety of their parents' (or grandparents') laps.

I think the only caveat to all this is that any parent bringing a kid
into the space needs to be aware of possible crude language that might
occur in their presence. Personally, I always try to censor myself
when minors are present but nobody is perfect and many of us are quite
used to using profanity freely. Up until recently, we had a tongue-in-
cheek, unofficial, space motto painted in big red letter across one of
the walls that said "Just Fucking Do It!".

That makes sense, personally I'm not one of those parents that thinks their kids have NEVER heard a swear in their life but if it comes out of her mouth and I hear it... oh boy! lol
That being said it's something to note and good to be aware of, thanks!

Thanks, all, for your thoughtful comments. I'm glad PS:1 is trying to
go the "open but wise" route for children. I agree parents know their
kids best and should supervise responsibly. It's cool to see other
parents here, too :)

Hey there. I'm a lurker on your list from up at the milwaukee makerspace. We are currently having a discussion about children, liability and general liability language, too. This discussion has been great to follow.
Would you be able to share your liability waiver language with us? We are curious about how other spaces are dealing with these issues.
Thanks!

Both actually! One of our members - Nicolle Neulist - was an attorney when we got started and was instrumental in helping us with legalese. She practiced bankruptcy law at the time, but has since leveled up to a career as a sysadmin. You may recognize her in certain circles as @rogueclown.
