Interesting link I just found: http://www.riastats.com/

It shows install-base of Flash, Silverlight, and Java, including all
versions of each. Unfortunately, Java is around 70% compared to Flash
at 97%.

I'm not sure exactly how they compiled they statistics, so it could be
skewed.

For sure, the Flash plugin is more present than the Java one. But on the other hand, there are big differences between countries.

In France for example, thanks to the online country tax declarations mechanism (a Java applet), the Java plugin presence is far over 70%.

My 2 cents.

For what it's worth, Java is used for banking here (Singapore)
although their reasons are mysterious and probably born of ignorance.
("Greater security"? Unlikely.)

It's always seemed to me that people who have Flash installed tend to
have Java too, for some random application. Assuming the data's
correct, I wouldn't consider 70% to be a handicap. Keep on coding~

Found another site that does plug-in stats collection: http://www.statowl.com/java.php

It's much more detailed than riastats.com.
