Born as Kate Garry Hudson on April 19, 1979 in Los Angeles, California, Kate Hudson was destined to be an actress from the moment she was born. Her parents were both famous actors, and her mother, Goldie Hawn, even won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in "Cactus Flower." Hudson's father Bill was a well-known actor, comedian, and musician. Before Hudson had reached the age of two, her parents separated and subsequently got divorced. This led to Hudson living with her mother in Colorado for much of her childhood. When Hudson was only four, her mother began a relationship with American actor Kurt Russell, who eventually became like a dad to Kate. In later years, Kate Hudson remarked in interviews that her birth father didn't really want anything to do with her and she considers Russell to be her true father.
As a child, Hudson developed a love of dancing and singing. Many of her teachers said that she was born to be a star and had a natural talent for acting. Her mother recognized this and signed Hudson up for dance lessons from a very young age. By the time Hudson was ten years old, she was performing at the Santa Monica Playhouse. Due to the fact that her mother and Russell were both involved with acting, Hudson spent a large amount of her childhood wandering around movie sets. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell encouraged Hudson to learn as much about acting as possible, but they also wanted her to have a normal childhood.
While growing up, Hudson did not have a sister around. Besides her older brother, Oliver, she grew up with Russell's son, Boston, from a previous marriage, and Wyatt, who was her half-brother. By the time she was in high school, many people could see that Hudson wanted to develop an acting career. Her parents enrolled her at the Crossroads Performing Arts High School in Santa Monica, where she learned what it would take to become an actress. During summer breaks, Hudson would travel to Massachusetts and act in the Williamstown Theater Festival.
In 1997, Hudson graduated from high school and was accepted at New York University; however, she decided that she wanted to pursue an acting career first. Her family thought that she should have gone to college, but Hudson really wanted to get some acting experience first. That same year, Hudson made a number of small television appearances, most notably in "Party of Five." She was supposed to make her film debut in "Escape from L.A.," but she refused the part because Kurt Russell was starring in the film, and she wanted to build a name for herself instead of relying on connections.
Over the next few years, Hudson slowly made progress in Hollywood, with minor acting roles in "Ricochet River," "200 Cigarettes," and "Desert Blue." Hudson caught her big break with the lead role of Penny in the 2000 film "Almost Famous." Hudson was not initially cast in the lead role, and the film was supposed to be scrapped after the initial actress pulled out. However, Hudson, who was originally meant to be playing the role of a supporting cast member, managed to convince director Cameron Crowe that she should be given the role.
On New Year's Eve in 2000, Hudson married musician Chris Robinson. In January 2004, Hudson gave birth to a son, Ryder. Unfortunately, a couple of years later the couple split and later divorced due to irreconcilable differences. Over the first part of that decade, Hudson found success with roles in a number of romantic comedies, the most successful of which was "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days." In 2006, Hudson starred alongside Owen Wilson-whom she would eventually date for a few months-in "You, Me and Dupree." The film was ultimately considered a success, and it led to other roles in films such as "Fool's Gold" and "My Best Friend's Girl."
A year later, Hudson got her first taste of directing, with the feature film "Cutlass." The movie starred many well-known actors, such as Dakota Fanning, Chevy Chase, Kristen Stewart, and her father, Kurt Russell. For the next few years, Hudson dated a string of high profile men, such as Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees and Lance Armstrong. In 2010, Hudson met Matthew Bellamy, a member of the band Muse, and the pair began dating. Hudson announced in January 2011 that she was pregnant with Bellamy's child, and a few months later the couple became engaged. That summer Hudson gave birth to her second child, a son, Bingham.
Over the past couple of years, Hudson has only appeared sporadically in film, partly because she now has to raise her younger son. However, later in 2013 Hudson will appear in the political thriller film "The Reluctant Fundamentalist."
