Everyone from time to time has experienced a feeling of sadness or felt down in the dumps. Luckily those periods of sadness are often temporary. Depression is more than just feeling "blue", it is a serious condition that not only affects the mind, but it affects the body as well. Depression can change all aspects of a persons everyday routine including work performance, sleeping, eating, relationships and the over all way a person thinks about themselves. A person that has depression can not think happy thoughts to magically make the depression go away, or simply snap-out-of-it. Depression sufferers can stay depressed for weeks, months and even years, if they do not receive treatment. An important part of treating depression, is recognizing the symptoms early. Symptoms do vary and the severity of depression can change with time.

Below you will find 10 of the most common symptoms of depression

•Feeling extremely guilty, constant feelings of sadness and hopelessness.

•Difficulty sleeping that includes loss of sound sleep and extreme insomnia.

•A feeling of emptiness, anxiety and sadness that will not go away.

•Physical symptoms that include headaches, loss of appetite and pain for no reason.

•Constant restlessness, short temper and irritability.

•A lack of energy, constant fatigue, slow metabolism and lower activity levels.

•Noticeable weight loss or weight gain, accompanied by appetite loss or eating binges.

•A sense of indecisiveness and an increasing inability to focus.

•Constantly expecting the worse and overwhelming insecurity.

•Thoughts of suicidal inclinations.

If you have experienced or are experiencing any of the symptoms of depression, you should consult your family doctor. Remember that the symptoms of depression that are listed above are only the 10 most common symptoms. If you notice any change in your behavior, you should consult with your doctor. A doctor will perform a thorough examination so that any physical causes or medical problems can be ruled out as a cause for depression. If the doctor believes that it is necessary, he or she may recommend that you consult with a psychologist or psychiatrist.

Sometimes it is possible to ease the feeling of depression by trying to erase negativity from your thoughts. Sometimes focusing on your breathing will work as a distraction or listening to music. You can also try new activities that occupy your thoughts and absorb time as well as interest you. Group activities and meeting people may also help escape the feelings of depression. If you are feeling depressed, you should try and avoid being around negative people and stressful situations. Instead, you can try to enjoy a movie or gather up the family for an outing such as a hike or picnic. Try to stay positive and try to maintain self confidence without loosing any faith in yourself. If you seek help from your doctor, it is very important to follow all of his or her advice. To help one cope with depression, a doctor my suggest lifestyle changes, anti-depressants or therapy. Depression is a serious matter and that is why it is so important that you consult a doctor if you think that you are experiencing any symptoms of depression.
