Color styles have shifted in recent years, and darker, dramatic colors are now found in increasing amounts in the bedroom. Even though deep shades can have a soothing effect that might be desired for the bedroom, too much darkness can cause the room to feel and look too narrow. When selecting color, recall that a color chip in florescent store lighting will appear entirely different in your home. It`s well worth the effort and time to purchase sample jars of paint to test colors on the walls of your room.

You also have the alternative of painting over a color that ends up being darker than what you had hoped for, but remember that you may want to use many coats of heavy primer to mask the dark color below. Perhaps you would choose to stave off painting entirely. The good news is that there are other alternatives that you can use to brighten up your dark bedroom.

You can lend contrasting colors to keep darker colors from seeming to be too severe. You can use white as a color to supply some visual tension in a darkly colored or poorly lit room.

You should likewise think about adding color. Take a look at a color wheel: Colors that are immediately across from each other on the wheel are compatible; for instance, green and red; or orange and blue; or violet and yellow. The utilization of color will add more interest visually inside a dark room; you can add a neutral to the mix of colors for transition, such as tan, green and red. Light plays another major role in the sensed darkness or brightness of a room. You should allow natural light to fill the room by using window treatments or curtains that do not entirely block the windows; for example, utilizing valances or side panels over shades or blinds gives you both mastery of light and privacy at the same time.

Make certain that your bedroom has three kinds of light which are required for each room – task lighting, general lighting and accent lighting. General lighting may be overhead lighting, floor or table lamps. Task lighting may include bedside reading lamps; accent lighting may be electric sconces or use wall sconces for candles to spotlight artwork. In rooms that are dark, more lighting will obviously be needed.

• Consider utilizing free standing mirrors and vanity mirrors as well as lighting fixtures with reflective surfaces or crystals in order to amplify any natural or artificial lighting in a darker room. Add softness and natural beauty with wall vases filled with greenery and graceful blooms.

• Light colored bedding and art can also help to create a contrast with dark walls. The dark hues on the wall will make your artwork stand out.

• Make the space feel bigger and more immense by reducing visual color or busy wall decor. Remember that the eye comes to rest on anything that is flamboyant. For this reason, keep your accessories in the room to a minimum and store everything that is not needed out of the way.
