Online applications are the norm when it comes to finding a job whether you are applying for a part-time job at a restaurant or a full-time job at a law firm. Use these tips to get through the process seamlessly. If you want to know more about this topic, you can read the tips and guide below.
Create a "cheat sheet."Many hiring managers want to know the same things about you: employment history, job duties, personal and professional accomplishments, etc. Why not create a cheat sheet with all this information already compiled. Before you submit it on your applications, customize for the specific job description, adding keywords and phrases that will push your application past applicant tracking systems. If they give a choice to upload a resume or cut and paste, do both.
Update your social profiles. You never know when a hiring manager will check out your LinkedIn, Google+ or Facebook profile to get to know you before an interview. Some web applications even allow you to apply using your LinkedIn account, pulling that information for your application. Make sure that your profile information is correct, your resume is uploaded and your portfolio is up-to-date. Also, it's never a bad idea to remove any inappropriate content from any public profiles.
Customize your application for each job.An applicant tracking system (ATS) is usually the first entity to see your application and resume. In order to get your application through to a human resource person, place key words from the job description into your application, resume and cover letter. That being said, read the job description carefully and make sure you are actually qualified enough to perform the duties.
There are a couple of things that you should consider discussing only after you've received a job offer from the company. Try not to state your salary desires, and if the web application won't let you continue without filling in the field, just use $1 to get passed that section. Also, consider withholding your references' information until you get an offer from the company. Companies don't typically call references until late in the process, so in the initial application feel free to let them know that you will supply references upon strong mutual interest.
Cover letters work best when they are concise, specific, and original. Don't waste time writing a long explanation of each of your skills and traits. Make sure that your cover letter includes key words and phrases used in the job description. Most importantly, make sure your cover letter convinces a hiring manager to read your resume.
You applied and got rejected; what's next? Persist. Research the hiring manager, revise your cover letter and resume and send it to them directly. What do you have to lose?
Lastly, read everything twice. Make sure that there are no misspellings, omitted information or unprofessional language. Most managers admit to throwing out applications as soon as they find a misspelled word, no matter how good the candidate is for the job.
