Hall benches are a great way to add a little bit of furniture and seating in a part of the home that is often neglected. Hallways are interesting parts of the home because they are very vital, yet they may not see much actual use. Hall benches can serve many purposes in addition providing a place to sit. They can also be great solutions for adding just a little bit of storage or even a place to hang oats. There are so many different kinds of hall benches these days that it is fairly simple to find exactly what you need if you take the time to do it. Here are some tips to help you with selecting the best hall benches.

Use

The most important thing to think about when looking at hall benches is the type of use you expect to get out of them. Most people may not expect anyone to spend much time sitting on a bench that is in a hallway, so often they are simply a means to an end. Many benches have storage underneath the seat. Storage options include a large space under a seat which lifts up, drawers, cabinets, and shelves that may come with or without baskets that pull out. Some benches also have very high backs with hooks on them so that they provide a great place for people to hang their coats up.

Style

Since hall benches are often the only piece of furniture in the room, it is alright if they do not match the rest of the house perfectly. However, the style of the bench is still very important. It should match your personality and, if possible, not look completely out of place with the rest of the furniture in your home. Of course matching styles with the hall bench is easier because the bench does not need to match perfectly. However, having a modern bench in a home that is full of antiques would look rather strange.

Material

The type of material the bench is made out of is also a major part of this decision. Most benches are made out of wood or metal, and it is the way this material is used that creates the style you are looking at. The type of material that is used is important because of durability issues, but don't forget that the bench will probably see less use than a lot of the other pieces of furniture in your home, so durability of materials is less of a concern. The main issue is making sure that the wood is not so soft that it will mark up easily and that the bench is put together well enough that it will not fall apart.

Size

One thing that most people forget to do when shopping for any kind of furniture is measure. This may not seem like a major issue when you are talking about a hallway that does not have any other pieces of furniture in it, but it can be a huge problem. There are so many different sizes of benches available that it is extremely easy to purchase one that is simply too big for the space that you have. You need to know the length and width of the hallway, but remember to account for the fact that it is a hallway with frequent foot traffic. You don't want a bench that will just be in the way. Also if there are any doors that open out into the hallway, be sure that the bench will not interfere with the way those doors swing open.
