When the kids go back to school, and the leaves start to fall, you know Halloween isn't far off! Halloween brings out the kid in everyone and makes adults want to dress up and be silly again. If there's a candy reward for being silly, that's just a bonus! Try to make Halloween a family event. Your kids probably have a strong opinion about what they want to be, so work with them to come up with group costumes.
Family Halloween Costume ideas
Below are some typical kid costumes and suggested ways to turn their ideas into a family costume.
• Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
Cowabunga dude! Turtle Power is going to be hot this year. Dress your group as Michelangelo, Donatello, Splinter, Leonardo, Raphael and you'll be set to get some totally awesome candy! Disposable aluminum roaster pans painted green make easy DIY turtle shells.
• Disney's "Frozen"
'Do you want to build a snowman?' Little girls are going to be begging for Elsa and Anna costumes this year. Add Olaf, the snowman and Kristoff and you'll be getting loads of warm hugs from your little princess.
• Super Heroes
Let your child pick his or her favorite, and add on from there...Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman. By the time your whole family is dressed, you'll have your own super "Justice League".
Super Creative DIY Halloween Costume Ideas
There are always a couple of families that dress up that make you think, 'why didn't I think of that?!' With a little early planning, and some stuff from around the house, your family can have the most creative costumes in the neighborhood.
• Family Game Pieces
Create costumes modeled after your favorite family game night pieces. Pick from favorites like cards, dice, checkerboard and checkers, Monopoly cards, and Sorry. Get creative!
• Ghoul Family
Put a little fright in your night! White ripped clothing, white face paint, blackened eyes and teased hair, make an easy ghoul family costume. Let one kiddo be a walking tombstone and you're sure to spook the neighbors this Halloween.
• Lego Pieces
Go as Lego pieces of different shapes and colors. Hot glue lines of plastic party cups (or aluminum cans) to cardboard boxes cut with head and arm holes. Paint in rainbow colors. So cute, easy and cheap!
• Jellyfish
Clear umbrellas with pink, silver, and iridescent ribbons dangling down make adorable jellyfish. Add a little sparkly bling to the umbrella by gluing rhinestones on the top. Or, add some battery lights to the metal underneath so your jelly will glow in the night! Dress in pastel colors and carry the umbrella, and you'll look like a bunch of jellyfish gliding down the sidewalk. If you have a kiddo that loves Spongebob, give him a net to go jellyfishing. It's quick, easy and cute!
• Favorite Novels
Turn cardboard boxes into the covers of your favorite novels, like Twilight, The Hunger Games, The Fault in Our Stars, and Harry Potter. Perfect for a librarian's family, or just the family that loves to read.
• Black Eyes Peas
This is one of the easiest costumes ever! Have everyone dress in black pants and tops and add a white "P" to the center of the tops. Paint black eye make-up around each person's right eye. Voila! You have the "black eyed peas". Cute, huh?
• Stick Figures
White sweat pants and top, and black fabric paint, make an easy stick figure costume. Simply paint lines down arms, legs, and torso, like a child's stick figure drawing. Create a stick figure mask and you're ready to go. If you want to make it super cool, attach glow sticks to the lines, and you'll glow in the dark as you walk down the street. Awesome!
• Sweet as Pi
Everybody loves dessert, but not so many people love mathematics. Combine the two in one cute, fun, and amazingly simple costume! Get t-shirts in red, orange, lime green, and blue. Using fabric paint, draw the 'Pi" mathematical symbol on the front of each shirt. There you have it - an assortment of delicious Pi! Red for cherry, orange for pumpkin, green for key lime, and blue for blueberry...delicious!
• Duck Dynasty
Embrace the facial hair and dress up as the cast of Duck Dynasty. Everyone but mom gets beards, bandanas, and dark sunglasses for this costume. Mom gets a homey apron and kitchen spatula because you know Ms. Kay loves to cook!
• Clown Around
Everyone loves a clown! Nope, clowns can be downright scary! Trick-or-treat the neighbors as a family of evil clowns and you'll give your neighbors nightmares on Halloween. Be sure to wear a "happy" multi-colored wig and fanged teeth to really scare the daylights out of everyone.
Halloween is a time for families to have fun and be crazy together. You don't have to spend a lot, just get creative. The best Family Halloween costumes are often the easiest to make. Happy trick-or-treating!
