Those who work with blood or other potentially infectious material are at high risk of exposure from bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne pathogen classes can be taken online or through office training. Most online courses are less than an hour and certification is available directly after the class. OSHA does require employees to be trained and certified if they regularly work with blood and body fluids.

Training Requirements

Those who work around and with blood need to take bloodborne pathogen classes. These classes include education concerning HIV, AIDS, HBV and HBC. Workers in all health care industries include dentistry plus public safety jobs are out in the open concerning bloodborne pathogens on a daily basis and need to take these classes. Doctors, nurses, fire and rescue personnel dentists, police officer and laboratory workers are at risk and should be trained on clean up and exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Those who do not have direct contact with potential infectious materials are also at risk of exposure. These types of employees include non-health care workers in the housekeeping janitorial industry and tattoo artists.

If you attempt to provide help or aid to injured persons or for children playing with contaminated sharps you need to be aware of bloodborne pathogens. There are over a million Americans infected with HIV as many more who carry hepatitis B or C. For your healths sake and those around you, it is vital that you take bloodborne pathogen classes.

Risk of Infection after Exposure

Those healthcare workers who have received the hepatitis B vaccine program have developed immunity to the virus. There is virtually no risk for infection. Average risk for infections after a needlestick is only 1.8 percent and no known blood exposure to the eye, nose or mouth has been recorded. You may contract HCV from exposure to skin that is broken or injured, but there are no known risks from exposure to intact skin from a carrier of bloodborne pathogens.

The risk of infection after being exposure to blood and body fluids of someone infected with HIV is about one in three hundred. Most needlestick exposures do not led to infection, but precautions do need to be taken to avoid exposure.

Types of Training Classes

Most training modules are for those who are exposed to blood and other potential infectious material. Classes are intended to offer an understanding of what bloodborne pathogens are plus the common modes of transmission and methods of preventing exposures.

Most bloodborne pathogen training is introductory in nature. If your job responsibilities involve occupation exposure to bloodborne pathogens you need specific training to your work environment and practices. If you take bloodborne pathogen classes you will be given the opportunity to ask questions and receive answers.

After taking certified bloodborne pathogen classes you will be able to define bloodborne pathogens. Explain universal precautions and recognize the signs or labels that indicate a bloodborne pathogen hazard. You should also be able to give examples of how bloodborne pathogens can be transmitted and distinguish between a work practice control and an engineering control.
