If you're going to Las Vegas during Christmas holiday 2013, consider taking a helicopter or airplane tour to the Grand Canyon. The flight over is beautiful this time of year and rates are some the lowest I've seen in years.

Do keep in mind that helicopters will not be flying on Christmas Day (12/25). If you need to get airborne that day, take an airplane tour, all of which will be flying as regularly scheduled.

Also keep in mind that the number of flights per day during winter time are reduced as it's considered "slow season." Prices during this time are low but they do tend to increase inside the holiday week.

Getting the lowest price is quite simple. The first step is to book in advance. I usually recommend within 72 hours. I also recommend that you book your flight online. Using the Internet is always the cheapest option because there's no commission.

There are two kinds of flights: Air and landing. Air is always cheapest, with the basic flight going over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, the West Rim of the Canyon and back. These packages usually include hotel pick up and drop off and take about three hours total.

Landing tours go to bottom or top of the West Rim. The most popular is the one that lands at the bottom for a Champagne picnic. Following closely behind that one is the Skywalk express, which comes with passes to the glass bridge.

There are no helicopter rides to the South Rim from Las Vegas. If you want to go to the South Rim, you must take the airplane, which goes direct to Grand Canyon National Park airport in 60 minutes (pretty quick!).

This flight includes up to 2.5 hours inside the National Park, which I find quite sufficient to see all the key sights. You can also add a helicopter ride into the mix. It's a 30-minute trip that goes from the South Rim to the North Rim and back.

Vegas airplane tours also go to the West Rim. They follow the same flight path as helicopters, except they fly at a higher altitude. Plane rides are also cheaper than helicopter trips.

Like helicopters, you can take an air-only plane ride or a landing tour. Planes don't land at the bottom, however. They land at the top, and from there you can opt to take a helicopter ride to the bottom (and even add a boat ride into the experience).

The other West Rim plane ride I like is the optional Skywalk trip. The Glass Bridge has become one of Vegas' hottest things to do but it's not for everyone. Thus some travelers will appreciate this fact that you can fly over, land, check out the Skywalk, and, if it's something you want to do you can purchase tickets onsite.

Conclusion

I hope I was able to shed light on Las Vegas air tours to the Grand Canyon during the Christmas holiday. You can choose from helicopter and airplane tours and visit the West Rim or the South Rim. Remember, though, to book your flight in advance and online. This way you'll get the flight you want at a price you like.
