Portable generators can serve multiple purposes ranging from recreational use to powering essential appliances during a power outage. If you plan to use a portable generator for your backup power needs during a blackout, consider these issues to ensure that your generator delivers the power youre relying on.
* Do a quick calculation to determine the appliances that will be powered by the generator and how much energy they will require to both start and run. Your portable generator probably wont be able to power everything in your home so knowing what will be hooked up in advance can speed the process of powering up.
* Rolling the generator into position to provide power to the house may require some work, possibly in nasty weather. If youre not sure that youll be able to move the generator to the location near enough to the house to connect it to appliances, etc., building a shelter in that location will have the generator ready to go when you need it. Do not set up the shelter near doors, window or vents where emissions from the generator can get into the home.
* Make sure that you have sufficient fuel. Check the run times of your generator to determine how much fuel you should keep on hand. In the event of an extended outage, determine the appliances that will not be required for full time operation to conserve as much fuel as possible.
* Learn how your portable generator operates and interacts with the items that will be powered in the home. Take the time to understand the dangers that exist from trying to take shortcuts in terms of locating, running, and powering appliances, devices, and electronics in your home.
* Follow the users manual to ensure that your portable generator is properly maintained. The last thing anybody wants is to have everything in place, only to have a generator perform poorly or not at all because of negligence.
The versatility of portable generators makes them an attractive and easy option for powering a wide variety of items. When it comes to powering up items in your home, however, take some extra time to understand the factors that can ensure that youll have the safe delivery of the power you need when power from the grid is not available.
