Used for centuries by the Chinese in medicines and as remedies for ailments like headaches or indigestion, green tea extract has become extremely popular because of its known therapeutic values for the body and for the skin. It is also used extensively today in skin care products due to its potent antioxidants that are powerful in combating free radicals that cause so much damage to the skin and are considered a primary cause of aging in the skin.
Whether you drink green tea or get it because it is contained in products that you use, there seems to be ample proof that it promotes good health in your skin and strives to make you look younger. Everyone who is aging finds that to be good news and will do anything to ensure that their skin is as healthy and youthful looking as possible. Unfortunately, the skin’s exposure to excessive sunlight, pollution and smoking ensures that it is constantly under siege from free radicals so we need all the help we can get in ridding our skin of these deadly agents that not only can prematurely age our skin but can lead to serious diseases like skin cancer.
Benefits of Green Tea Extract:
With its rich supply of antioxidants, green tea extract has antibacterial properties making it a very effective way to stimulate the immune system. It is an effective treatment for acne in reducing the occurrences and helping to heal the skin and keep it protected during that process. It will reduce inflammation and works synergistically with sunscreen to neutralize the sun’s rays and protect the skin from the sun although it cannot block UV rays but rather works together to keep the skin protected. Ensure that you use a zinc oxide based sunscreen because it will not react to the green tea extract.
Green tea extract has been found to rejuvenate skin cells and repair them so that their life cycle is extended with regular use. It has been used to treat some skin conditions like psoriasis, Rosacea and acne with promotion of skin regeneration and healing of skin that is irritated and wounded. It has also been suggested that green tea extract prevents the occurrence of skin cancer by blocking the harmful enzymes that cause it.
Other benefits of green tea extract include soothing and calming skin that is sensitive or inflamed from the environment or from skin conditions. It has anti-inflammatory benefits that will improve these conditions and lessen them. It has been very effective in controlling acne without any bad side effects that are often found in other types of products. It improves the overall appearance of the skin so that it is healthier with less reoccurrences.
Look for Genuine Green Tea Extract Products:
Though green tea extract is a powerful antioxidant, it can easily oxidize when it comes into contact with oxygen so it is important to ensure that the green tea extract products that you purchase really contain enough to work its magic on your skin. If it is genuine green tea extract it should be listed at the top of the ingredient list on the label. It might be called EGCG or catechins as well. Concentrations of green tea extract of 200 milligrams or more are levels that are considered to be effective. Any less, and the dosage is so small that it will not have too much effect.
If the green tea extract is listed at the bottom of the list, chances are there is not much green tea extract in the product to be very effective. If the label reads “green tea fragrance” then it is not the extract you are looking for. As green tea needs an essential oil to be able to penetrate the skin – as it cannot do it by itself – you must look also at the carrier oil to see what has been used as it would be dissolved in it first. These could include herbal extracts, oils or alcohols. Camellia oil is derived from green tea and is considered one of the best, but it also can be expensive so it will not often be used.
