As a jeweler, you face unique security challenges because much of your inventory costs more than most people earn in a month. Handling expensive items on a daily basis means you absolutely must make safety and home security a priority. A thief won't think twice before stealing your livelihood and your entire inventory. Jewelry has long been a favorite target of criminals looking to make a quick buck. Working with high-priced items means you must invest the necessary time and effort to protect yourself, your family, and your business.

First, consider the security surrounding your store or showroom. Most jewelers keep their jewelry under lock and key, with locking display cases and a safe. Among the many security devices used by jewelers are surveillance cameras, motion detector and glass break alarms, and door and window alarms. Because of the high value of your inventory, make sure that you pay attention to every detail, every day: review the security footage, hide the jewelry in a safe, lock the door, and activate the alarms.

Once you leave the store, the risk to your security doesn't end. First, make sure that you are not being followed home from your showroom. Be particularly alert in parking lots and while driving home from your business. If you must take jewelry home with you, carry it on your person or in an unmarked, nondescript bag. The goal is to be as discreet as possible when carrying valuable possessions, whether it's jewelry or some other expensive item. Head straight home, rather than making several stops with the jewelry in your car.

There is no need to be paranoid, but the fact is that your line of work does put you at greater risk of being mugged or robbed. Consider carrying a stun gun, pepper spray, or another self defense device to thwart any potential attack. Still, remember that protecting your inventory is not worth putting yourself at risk. If a mugger demands your jewelry, hand it over. The jewelry can be replaced, but your life can not.

At home, install security devices to protect you and your family. This is true even if you don't routinely bring any part of your jewelry inventory home with you, but especially critical if you do. Home security cameras and alarms will help to protect your family. These devices are important for every homeowner to install, but especially so if they work with expensive items such as jewelry. Treat your home with the same level of protection as you do your store.

There is no need to go about your life in a panic, but it is important to realize that being a jeweler can expose you to a higher level of risk when it comes to criminals targeting you and your business. Make every effort to be on high alert, particularly when in or around your store or handling your inventory. Install the necessary security devices and use self defense products to protect you, your place of work, and your home.
