Billions of people suffer from pain every day. Some experience mild to moderate tolerable pain while some are bearing chronic or persistent pain. Most people may be just tormented by simple back pain while others suffer from excruciating migraine headaches. However, we all know for a fact that a very painful sensation to one person may just be a simple and manageable pain for the other. This just shows that pain is very subjective. But no matter how one perceives pain, it is but important to provide the best pain remedy for the person. Despite the common occurrence of pain among the different age groups, sex and socio-economic status all over the world, pain is one of the least understood medical problems ever discovered.

There are a number of pain remedies nowadays. Pain can be relieved pharmacologically, psychologically, through medical procedures, and even herbal medicines. First, let us tackle on the pharmacologic measure for pain relief. The frequently used medications for mild to moderate pain are aspirin, ibuprofen, paracetamol and acetaminophen. These are widely used because these can be purchased over-the-counter. These pain relievers, also known as analgesics, also help lower fever and, specifically, ibuprofen helps minimize inflammation.

Chronic and severe pain is usually treated with more potent pain killers like morphine and codeine. These stronger pain killers are indeed effective but their addictive property led the medical community to search and rely for other measures. However, in instances that the prescription of these stronger pain relievers is inevitable, it is important that the benefits must outweigh the adverse effects. Medications are effective but individuals may develop tolerance if regularly used.

Another promising method of pain remedy that is commonly used a thousand years ago up to now is acupuncture. Acupuncture is a technique for pain relief originally utilized by Chinese. This practice depends on thin needles. The acupuncture needle which is as thin as a thread is inserted in the skin in close proximity to the nerves. No one has concluded on how acupuncture works but there are many theories on how does this method relieves pain. Many thinks that acupuncture impedes pain by overloading the neuronal circuitry. Another theory proposes that acupuncture needles may stimulate the release of endorphins, the bodys natural pain killers.

Another best pain remedy is a procedure called Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation or TENS. Electrodes are attached to the skin just above the nerve endings that transmit pain signals to the Central Nervous System. The mechanism of this procedure is also theorized to be stimulating the release of endorphins just like acupuncture.

The two procedures mentioned above concentrate on the nerve endings underneath the skin. A different yet effective measure is Deep Brain Stimulation. Electrodes are also used here but not on skin, rather, implanted in portions of the brain and stimulated to stop pain impulses before they arrive at the sensory cortex where in pain is perceived. Studies show that this procedure can effectively block even the most intense pain stimuli and the good thing is that it does not affect other brain functions.

There are also herbal remedies to help easy inflammation pain. Herbs like turmeric, boswellia, and ginger can help ease inflammation. When inflammation is left unchecked, pain will arise.

No matter what method of pain relief you choose it is wise to only try one before moving on to the next. There are more pain remedies available nowadays. But just like pain, pain relief methods are also subjective. One pain management may apply to other individuals but will not apply to you.
