When you have to work overtime when working from home, do not let anything stop you from completing your tasks. Make sure that you do allow yourself some free quality time as well.

However well prepared you are when you are a home worker there will be days when additional time is needed in order to meet a clients deadline. There could be a number of reasons for this. They may have moved the goalposts on a deadline which means you have to speed up to finish it. Or perhaps you fell ill for a day or two and got a bit behind on your work.

Whatever the reason might be, it is your responsibility to make sure that deadline is met. If it isnt you could lose a valuable client and since this is your business you want to protect your client base as much as you can.

In most situations you shouldnt be working overtime on a regular basis. You may find that you have to initially in order to get the business up and running; you will probably also need to maximise your income for a start. But once that initial stage is passed you must try and set normal working hours for yourself.

So How Do You Cope when a Deadline Means You Have to Go Outside of Those Hours for Once?

The first task is to figure out how long it is likely to take you in additional hours to complete the project. It could be anything from just an additional hour to half a day or more. Obviously the shorter the length of time required the sooner you will be able to get it done and the easier you will find it to do.

In addition to this you need to block out additional areas of your schedule to make it work. For a start ask yourself whether any other jobs could be moved back to make more room in your normal working day. For example do you have some spare time tomorrow that you could spend doing this instead of looking for new business? While this is an essential task it could also be put to one side for the moment, allowing you to use some of your normal working day to complete the job.

When it comes to overtime though, you need to think about when you are most productive through the day. If you are a morning person you might be better off getting up earlier and making the most of those early hours. If you work better later in the day you may have to resign yourself to working during the evening.

You also need to decide whether you want to get the work finished in one block or whether you need to split it into different sections to make the most of the time available to you. If you attempt to get it finished in one go, make sure you allow yourself short breaks every now and then to get some fresh air.

As you can see there are always solutions to come up with when you have to work overtime on a job. Trying to avoid it in the first place is a good idea, but sometimes you simply have to prepare for the extra few hours.
