All homeowners should be concerned about keeping their home safe at night. This doesn't just mean locking the doors and installing outdoor security lighting - the inside of your home also needs protection. Many families chose to install alarm systems to alert them to any intruders. Whether you have alarms installed or not, don't overlook the safety of those living inside your home.
Many parents are well aware of the need for night lights for children. Night lights can help you take care of a newborn without starting the baby with a bright light, or peek at a sleeping child without waking her. They are equally useful to help preschoolers find their way to the bathroom or into your room during the night. Besides the obvious safety issues, these lights can also help to chase away your child's scary monsters, helping everyone in the home get a good night of rest.
If you don't have young children, you may easily overlook the need for night lights within the home. Security night lights, either those that remain on all night or those that are activated by motion, will keep you safe if you should get up in the middle of the night for any reason. While it's doubly important to install such lighting if you have children or elderly parents living with you, every family home should have nightlights. They're inexpensive, they are practical, and they can save you from trips and falls during the night.
Besides scaring away your child's imaginary monsters and helping you find your way, nightlights can also help protect you against other unwelcome visitors. When you provide adequate lighting within your home, any burglar who can see this from outside is much less likely to enter. Still, it's important to strike the right balance between too bright and too faint, especially to avoid disturbing sleeping family members. There's no reason to leave all of the lights in the house on after dark, as long as you've installed adequate security lighting.
If you do hear strange noises, you won't be in the dark about what's going on in your home. How would you like to be frightened by coming face-to-face with a burglar in your own home, and be unable to even identify him? You'll be much better equipped to escape unharmed if there is at least a little light.
You may think that your home is safe as long as you have regular lighting with light switches in every room, but what would you do if the power went off? Power failure lights are small and handy nightlights designed to turn on when the power goes out. These can be crucial in any emergency that occurs at night.
To build safety into your home, add nightlights in every bedroom, along hallways, and especially near stairways or anything else that may be a tripping hazard. Make sure there is a nightlight in the kitchen and every bathroom, too. Consider automatic models, which turn on after dark or with movement, to eliminate the need to turn them on manually at night.
