What is Osteoarthritis and what are the effects on the human body? Osteoarthritis is a disease of the joints that wears down the cartilage of the joints. The cartilage helps cushion the joints from any severe impact or even regular impact such as walking. The cartilage also acts as a lubricant for the joints so that the bones do not rub against each other. Once the cartilage is worn down over time or because of past injury the bones will rub against each other causing friction. First comes the pain then you will start to see the effected joint start to swell up and even turn red in color.
Over time the joint may be so worn out that it will not be able to function and possible have to be replaced. Osteoarthritis is pretty much the most well know out of all the different kinds of arthritis. Everyone has a possibility to get osteoarthritis. There are many different factors that can cause osteoarthritis. Being overweight can cause it and a quick increase of weight over a short period of time can also be a problem. Most people as they get older can get osteoarthritis. This is because the joints and cartilage keep getting worn down due to the wear and tear over time.
It is just natural that as we get older our joints become brittle. Most start to experience hip joint pain as they grow older. A lot of people do not realize but their osteoarthritis could be due to a defect in the cartilage of the joints from birth as well.
