Milwaukee is known for little more than beer, the Milwaukee Brewers, the Milwaukee Bucks, and being the setting for That �70s Show. It�s a city in Wisconsin just north of the metropolis that is Chicago, so what could possibly be there? Well, the short answer is a lot. Milwaukee is a fantastic city that provides ample activities, each of which involve plenty of walking and moving around. In the following paragraphs, we�ll discuss some of the things Milwaukee is less commonly known for, and how you can utilize them to stay active, healthy, and fit.
Exploring the Mitchell Park Domes
The Mitchell Park Domes are regarded as Milwaukee�s living landmark. Known around the area simply as The Domes, this is actually a nature conservatory unlike any other you�ve seen before. Three massive domes act as greenhouses preserving foliage not indigenous to the Milwaukee. The Desert Dome will make you feel as though you are in the middle of the Sahara Desert; the Tropical Dome may make you feel like you�re traversing an Amazonian rainforest; and the Floral Show Dome will amaze you with vibrant floral arrangements. You can spend an entire afternoon getting in some good exercise while walking through each of the domes and taking in the scenery, but you may just want to stick around until after the sun has set to see the domes illuminated at night. It truly is a site worth seeing.
Visiting The Milwaukee County Zoo
The Milwaukee County Zoo is a great place to spend a weekend day. Of course, any zoo can offer plenty of walking with abundant sightseeing, but the Milwaukee County Zoo boasts a larger collection than most other zoos in the country. In fact, there are currently more than 1,800 animals at the zoo. Highlights of the zoo include exhibits featuring penguins, gorillas, mandrills, and Japanese macaques. So, take the family along or just head out to the zoo on your own to discover the splendor that awaits you. You won�t even notice that you�ll be staying active throughout the day.
Running Along Lake Michigan
There�s a beach in Milwaukee? Yes, there is. It isn�t as glamorous as Laguna Beach or South Beach, but it is special in its own right. In fact, one thing that makes it so special is that it isn�t situated along the Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific Ocean, but the western shore of Lake Michigan. The most commonly visited beach in Wisconsin�s largest city is known as Bradford Beach, and it offers plenty of parking spaces and several entrances for the public. Once you�re there, you�ll find that the scenery is nothing short of magnificent, with seemingly endless coastline to the north and south, water as far as you can see east, and the Milwaukee cityscape to the west. What�s even better than the scenery, though, is that Bradford is ideal for walking, jogging, and running. So, if you reside in Milwaukee or you�re just visiting for a period of time and want to be active while there, make a trip over to Bradford Beach.
Taking a Stroll along the Milwaukee RiverWalk
If running along the beach isn�t quite your cup of tea, then perhaps you�d prefer to take a stroll through the city along the Milwaukee River. The river itself stretches some 104 miles west from the shores of Lake Michigan, and just west of its delta it meanders through Downtown Milwaukee. Along the river in downtown is a sidewalk known as the Milwaukee RiverWalk. Lining the Milwaukee RiverWalk are plenty of shops, restaurants, boutiques, and much more. Whether you go for the shopping, the food, or just to walk along the river, you�re certain get in some good exercise while doing something simple.
