The absolute wrong time to find out that you have made a terrible mistake in your selection of a particular physician or specialist is after you have begun a treatment regimen. There is no way to guarantee that you will never have a negative experience with the doctors you choose. But now, more than ever before in our history, enough reliable information is available at your fingertips online that you need never enter a patient-physician relationship without knowing almost everything there is to know about a doctor.

How to Search Online for Physicians

When you begin to research a particular physician or specialist on the Internet, naturally youll want to make sure that you input the most useful terms in the search field on Google, Bing, or some other search engine. Start with his or her name, certainly, but dont stop there. Couple the name with modifying terms, such as:

 Reviews
 Complaints
 Awards
 Certifications
 Legal action
 Malpractice
 Disciplinary action

This search might yield hundreds, or even thousands, of pages. The trick now is to sort through them and find the ones that will be most useful for you.

Finding Reputable Reviews

There are many websites and services that offer ratings for physicians. These include healthgrades.com, ratemds.com, vitals.com, zocdoc.com, admere.com, and dozens more. You might also find websites that have not been around as long as some of the most reputable sites. Chances are, you will want to take reviews from those websites with a grain of salt. This brings us to the most important factor when determining what online reviews to take seriously whether the review site is populated with closed loop reviews or open loop reviews. A closed loop service is like Angies List, which caters to home improvement customers but only allows people who have registered for the service to post reviews. An open loop service allows anyone to post reviews and that means anyone, including representatives of the physicians office or competitors.

Government Websites

Because physicians must be licensed within the state or states where they practice, information about them can usually be found on the websites for the state government entity responsible for administering physician licensing. For example, in the state of Florida, the Florida Board of Medicine oversees physician licensing, and that government entitys website provides a portal for verifying that a doctor is licensed. State and local consumer protection agencies might also have information on file about physicians who have been disciplined.

After the Internet Research

Once you have found all you can online about a physician or specialist, if you are comfortable making your quest public, go on Facebook or Twitter and crowd-source the question. Your friends, family members, and acquaintances on social media platforms might be able to share some insight based on their experiences with a particular medical professional. Keep in mind that their experiences were shaped by their unique circumstances, but you will no doubt learn more from people you know and trust than from strangers on the Internet. Also talk to others you are comfortable speaking with about your healthcare needs.

Conduct Several Interviews

Finally, once you have completed your initial research, schedule an in-person or telephone interview with the physicians who have passed muster so far. This is a crucial step, because even a physician with the most impressive credentials must be able to connect with patients on an interpersonal level. Without that connection, and without demonstrable empathy, you run the risk of developing a personality conflict with your doctor and thats not healthy for anyone.
