The opportunities for home-based small businesses are boundless!! Even in these days of economic downturn, there is still a need for individuals who provide specialized services. In fact, the market for these services is growing, since many people would prefer to give their money to someone they know, or to a small cottage-industry service than to a faceless, high-priced corporation, and many times people need a more affordable option than they can find through professionals.
Take, for example, child care. With most people with children having to work outside the home, there is a desperate need for people to take care of the children of the workers. How many times do we see on the news where a mother has tried leaving her small children in the care of her older children, or with someone who has proven to be untrustworthy, all because the mother had to go to a job to support her family? Many times professional day care or after school services are priced out of the reach of single moms and dads with children who must have care. In this case, the relatively low-priced home-based child care business is an answer to prayer, and a business that is easily grown by word of mouth. In some cases the state requires some certification for child care services, and sometimes there are rules as to how many children a home-based business can take care of without exceeding the law, so it is a good idea to do some research about this before you get overextended. This information is readily available online or through your state or county human services department. A good home-based child care business can provide children with the comforts of home with someone who knows and cares for them at a price that is more affordable to their parents.
Another home-based business option is pet sitting. These businesses are growing steadily as many people travel for business or pleasure and have to leave their pets behind. Not everyone has access to family or neighbors who can look in on their animals while they are gone, and for these people a small pet care business can be an ideal solution to their problem. A pet sitter can check on the family pets, provide them with food and water and some love, attention and care. The pet sitter can also check on the home while the occupants are away, pick up mail, water plants, and make sure the house is in good shape and safe. A pet sitter can provide peace of mind and a great deal of comfort to folks who have to be away from home for whatever reason.
Along the same lines is a house sitter, whose responsibilities would somewhat overlap those of a pet sitter, only instead of just visiting a home the house sitter would stay in the home to keep an eye on things. Many people choose this option when they have to be gone for extended periods of time.
If what you want is to start a small home-based business, let your imagination and creativity guide you. Somewhere there is someone who needs exactly what you have to offer.
