For every person who is currently considering getting started as a home worker, there is someone else who is already there. But does this make those who are already doing it experts on the matter?

When you want to learn about something new one of your first instincts is probably to engage with someone who knows about the subject. This could be in the form of a book, a face to face meeting or discussing the subject on a website. But should you take everything they say to be true?

In reality it is a good idea not to trust everything that you hear. In researching for this article I came across an interview with someone who had been a freelance writer for some ten years. His advice was not to expect to make any money for the first four years. And yet on plenty of other sites writers were saying they were making a decent income within a few weeks or months of starting some of them on a full time basis as well.

This simple example just goes to show that it is possible to get very conflicting advice. It is a good idea to get advice from several people and different sources when you are researching your own potential home working career. Make sure that you dont listen to one person and one person alone. You must make sure you read about the experiences of business people in order to get the best picture of what things could be like for you. Always use your own judgment to see whether you can ascertain what will work and what will not.

By using a range of sources you can get a more accurate picture of what to expect. If you were to read about that person who took four years to make a profit from freelance writing, it could put you off forever. But as we have seen, there are many other people who have found a faster route to success. This would make you question what that other person was doing in order for them to take so long to succeed. Dont let this put you off reading about other peoples experiences though. Simply take each one as you find it, and remember that it represents their experience and theirs alone. All that matters is that you are using this information to help you gauge what to expect when you first get started.

The worst thing would be to let one persons advice put you off trying something that could be a success for you. If you come across negative advice, make a point of finding the opinions of other people who are working in the same area. Do they have similar points of view or are they very different? If everyone is negative then you should rethink things. But if there is just one lone negative voice, dont let it put you off.
