Sometimes we see pictures on the internet which can give the impression that teeth whitening will always give amazing results but expectations need to kept under control as not all of us have really natural white looking teeth.

This more the case with younger people as their ambition is the Hollywood smile driven by TV programs, films and magazines. In the UK Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole are setting the standard as they are seen every week on the x factor with extremely white teeth. On TV celebrities the teeth are accentuated by the enhanced colour the TV stars skin and obviously studio lighting making the teeth look even whiter. In most cases TV stars will have veneers because of the fact they have the money and do not have the time to focus on keeping getting their teeth whitened.

I am not saying that teeth does work but just be realistic about how naturally white your teeth can become. Typically at the age of eighteen the teeth are going to be as white as they are going to be and therefore a twenty year old undertaking teeth whitening might only work four to five shades where a forty year old might achieve eight or nine shades due to the additional amount of staining being held in the pores of the enamel, its all relative!

People can get confused about what teeth whitening does and the term bleaching can be misunderstood greatly. If you pour bleach of a piece of clothing then it will whiten but this is not the same as how teeth whitening works. With teeth whitening there is a process of opening the micro pores of the enamel and the whitening gel releases the staining being held in the pores. The amount of the staining that will be removed will depend on how deep the staining has penetrated the enamel.

Liquid staining caused by tea, coffee, red wine etc can be worse that food or smoking related staining as these tend to be more external type of staining which is easier to remove. Deeper the staining the more treatments are required to remove.

Having a nice natural smile is achievable and typically what most people who enter the world of teeth whitening mainly desire and achieve. Over whitening the teeth is simply not possible unless you get veneers fitted.
The most successful treatments are also the most expensive so you pay for what you get! Home kits you can purchase on the internet do work but require them to be used frequently to see any noticeable difference. Home kits are good for maintenance and if used regularly can keep the teeth looking fresh and bright after a laser or zoom type of fast whitening treatment.

The use of home kits can be useful and should be considered to give you best of both worlds as the laser will whiten the teeth using strong and effective methods and the home kit will ensure the results last and your get the best long term value and of course white teeth!
