Lavender is among the oldest of all herbs with known medicinal properties in use today. It is famed for its essential oil, which has been an important ingredient in alternative medicine, notably aromatherapy. Healing practices in many countries have incorporated the use of lavender oil as a folk remedy passed down from generations to generations over the course of history. Nowadays it is used in treatment of certain medical disorders such as anxiety as well as in topical applications to relieve skin lesions.

The presence of lavender in many different cultures has been well documented since the ancient times. Having been mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, it is one of the few consecrate herbs utilized by the ancient Israelites to adorn the biblical temples on mount Zion in the sacred ritual of preparing the holy essence. The ancient Greeks in particular made extensive use of the scent as a form of soothing, therapeutic preparation much like its application in present day aromatherapy.

Antiseptic Properties

The Romans spent lavish amounts of money equivalent to a months wages of peasant laborers and added them to water in baths as it was widely believed to produce tonic properties responsible for the overall condition of muscles and skin. Dioscorides made mentions of the plant in his renowned pharmacopeia, De Materia Medica, as a remedy for sore throats, indigestion, and headaches. Pliny the Elder, a celebrated military physician, recommended its antiseptic properties in treating war wounds.

Lavender was introduced to England during Roman occupation. Ancient knowledge of its medicinal properties was preserved throughout the medieval times in Catholic communities largely by monks and nuns, but took a turn for the better when a Tudor monarch disbanded the organizations that made up the monasteries, making a number of writings public. It was reported that Queen Elizabeth I of England added lavender to tea to remedy migraine attacks. In the beginning of the modern period, English lavender products became popular all over the world.

Anti-inflammatory Effects

The antiseptic properties of lavender were fully taken advantage of during the first and second world wars, inasmuch as other antiseptic products were in limited supply. In the latter half of the 20th century, there was an increasing demand for medicinal lavender owing to a surge in popularity for aromatherapy. With the introduction of essential oils into mainstream press as therapeutic agents against stress and anxiety, the use of lavender has become more frequent.

More importantly, lavender has been observed to produce anti-inflammatory effects. When ingested in beverages like teas, it helps manage the rise in body temperature by decreasing the activities of inflammatory factors. As an essential oil, it has been reported to promote nasal decongestion when directly inhaled, resulting in respiratory disinfection. As a topical application, lavender is particularly effective in treating insect bites and in repelling insects as certain bugs have shown to avoid its scent.

Lavender is available in its pure form in 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 Ounce bottles at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like Now Foods to ensure quality and purity of the product you buy for external or internal use.
