High levels of cholesterol can be harmful to health. Perhaps, it would be better to understand that there are two types of cholesterol. HDL, also known as good cholesterol and LDL or bad cholesterol. Good cholesterol is useful to the body while bad cholesterol leads to health complications if its level rises above the normal.

A high level of cholesterol usually goes beyond the recommended healthy amount of 200. Having high levels of cholesterol will likely indicate a deficiency in minerals and vitamins in the body. Cholesterol will be found in excess in the body when the glands of the body fail to use it up in their functions. The adrenal, pituitary, thyroid and reproductive glands require cholesterol to carry out their functions but they may not use it all, leaving the excess in the bloodstream.

The excess cholesterol starts to line up on the arteries in the heart and eventually causing them to clog. Over the years, this build up will cause the heart arteries to harden and thicken, a condition known as atherosclerosis. This may lead to diseases like angina, stroke, coronary artery disease, and high blood pressure.

In some cases, the plaque that builds up on the arteries may be thin and can easily burst. If this happens, fat and cholesterol are released into the bloodstream. As a result, clotting may occur, which will restrict the flow of blood to the heart. When the heart does not get blood rich in oxygen, a heart failure is likely to occur.

The only way to be safe from these effects is to lower the amount of cholesterol in the body. This can be done naturally by the use of red yeast rice. Red yeast is a substance that is made by planting rice with a type of mold known as monascus purpureus.

The yeast in the rice contains an amount of statin which occurs naturally. Statin is the conventional drug that is used to lower cholesterol. Since red yeast rice contains natural statin, it is a better way of putting cholesterol levels under control. This is because statin brings with it side effects like muscle pains and liver damage while the yeast does not.

The yeast contains monacolin compounds that work by inhibiting the liver from producing cholesterol. Red yeast rice has been used for a long time by the Chinese to manage various ailments. It has recently been used to make supplements for use in lowering cholesterol.

A number of studies have been carried out to find out if the supplements work. The results of all the studies have proven that using it lowers the level of cholesterol by as much as 27%. In one study, one group was given the supplement and another one given a placebo. They were both put on the same exercise and diet. The group using the supplement had their cholesterol levels lowered more than the placebo group.

For maximum results, red yeast rice supplements should be combined with regular exercise and a balanced diet. Using red yeast rice can keep your heart and overall health safe.
