Within the United States, the way in which health information is used, stored, and transmitted is regulated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). HIPAA training is a requirement for most people working in the health care system, as well as in other industries which come into contact with health information, such as law firms and health insurance companies. The Internet has made it a lot easier for employers to provide their staff with the required training. Read below to find out everything you need to know about online HIPAA training.
Online HIPAA training can be divided in two broad categories: basic and advanced. While both types of classes cover the most important topics pertaining to the use of personal health information, the advanced course also deals with more complex issues, such as the HIPAA Security and Privacy rules. The type of course you will be required to attend depends on your job requirements so make sure you check this aspect before signing up.
A basic HIPAA training course will ensure that you comply with the minimum of requirements. However, there are numerous other types of certificates you can obtain, such as a Certified HIPAA Privacy Expert (CHPE), a Certified HIPAA Privacy Associate (CHPA), Certified HIPAA Security (CHPS) or Certified HIPAA Privacy Security (CHPPS). Make sure you check the exact type of certificate the course you are planning to attend offers.
The sign up process, the course itself, and the final exam are all achieved via the Internet. The entire process is a relatively short one and it should not take more than a couple of hours. If you would like to take your time to study the training material, you are certainly permitted to and in some situations it may be even highly recommended because, if you happen to fail the exam, you will not be able to obtain your certificate.
Online HIPAA training courses are offered to participants via an interface, which in most cases is relatively easy to use and does not require attendees to possess any advanced computer skills. The training material itself may be presented in the format of slideshows, text, or audio narrations. Additional training material, such as handbooks, may be offered once you sign up for the class.
Fees vary according to the company that is offering the training. In the case of online courses, it is very easy to compare prices and choose the one that best suits you. If your employer is in charge with providing you with the training, you will not have to worry about paying anything.
These are the most important things anyone should know about online HIPAA training. Any method of training, whether online or offline, is perfectly valid as long as it provides participants with a certificate, but the online method has the advantage of being a lot easier and faster to complete. And with so many health care training companies out there, finding a class that fits your needs and budget should not be too difficult.
