If you are frustrated because of a roof leak on your home and you only have two courses of action to take. The first one would be to locate and fix the leak yourself and maybe doing some research to properly fix the leak. The next option would be to pay out of pocket and hire a roofing contractor. Of course both options have their risks and advantages.
Fixing a roof leak by yourself can be simple if you already have some mechanical knowledge. It will help to research online or read some self-help home improvement guides. Sometimes you can just call around and get some free advice from a roofer that is willing to help and not give you a sales promotion. Getting as much advice and information as possible is needed to fully evaluate your particular situation. Keep in mind that fixing your roof can also be dangerous even though it will save you some money. Just make sure that you are aware of all the risks involved and use all safety precautions available to you. If your roof has a steep slope make sure that you use a proper safety line or even staging equipment such as a walkboard or scaffolding.
Hiring a roofing contractor is also a gamble because there are many contractors after your cash and really are not interested in doing a roof repair that will last. There are some good roofers out there but it’s a matter of finding the right one. Sometimes that can be a complicated process all by itself but if you take the time to find a roofer that you are comfortable with then take a leap of faith otherwise find and repair the roof leak yourself if you are confident and capable.
Fixing a roof leak is something that you do not want to neglect for too much time because it can cause even more damage or become a health risk by creating a petri dish for mold and fungus to grow throughout your home. After a locating the roof leak you can then decide if it is something that your willing to fix on your own. If you cannot find the moisture intrusion then get lots of free estimates from roofing companies to determine the cause and make the correct decision. In some cases the use of a thermo imaging device is needed to locate a hard to find roof leak.
Finding and fixing the roof leak either on your own or if you need to hire a roofing expert will depend on your ability, level of skill and the difficulty of the roof problem. If it’s just a pipe collar or missing shingles I would encourage a homeowner to fix this on their own because it is simple and with common sense it is a relatively easy fix. More involved and difficult roof repairs maybe a number of things like flashing problem, skylight leak, apron metal, valley problem or worse. Just use common sense to determine the nature of your roof problem and make an intelligent decision on which path to take.
