If you�ve looked through old family photos recently, you�ve probably noticed grandpa and grandma or mom and dad relaxing on Adirondack furniture. It�s easy to understand why. This classic piece of furniture � with its trademark slanted back and wide armrests � is a part of Americana.
Created at the turn of the century, Adirondack furniture is one of the most enduring and endearing styles of furniture in the United States. While the style began with the venerable Adirondack Chair, it has since evolved into a wide range of furnishings, from porch swings and tables to ottomans, footrests and even loveseats. The look is so unmistakable that it�s relatively easy to create new pieces that are distinctly Adirondack furniture.
Marketed originally in Westport, New York by Harry Bunnel, the classic design is manufactured by many companies today. Each has their own unique take on the Adirondack furniture they design and manufacture. Thanks to their innovative ideas, these all-weather furnishings come in a wide range of materials, colors and forms.
Today, wood Adirondack furniture is still considered the traditional style. They are usually crafted from cedar, teak or even mahogany. In the early days, the furniture was left in its natural color or stained to protect the wood. But now, they come in a rainbow of colors and finishes, something to match nearly any home or patio d�cor.
And not all are wood anymore. Thanks to advances in manufacturing, Adirondack furniture can also be made out of resin or plastic. These less expensive versions are easy to care for, since they can be quickly cleaned with soap and water.
Surprisingly, traditional Adirondack furniture doesn�t require a great deal of care either. If you plan to keep the wood finish, you�ll want to coat it with a wood sealer to keep the rain out. Wood is a porous material and if you let the elements weather it too much, it may discolor and crack over time.
Because of its timeless appearance, Adirondack furniture looks good nearly anywhere, from porches and decks to backyard gardens and conversation pits.
While the Adirondack Chair is known for its great comfort, nothing beats an Adirondack Rocking Chair. Add some tables in the same style and you�ll quickly have a spot where family and friends look forward to gathering.
When the weather turns cold, you can move your Adirondack furniture indoors for year round enjoyment. Covered porches, sunrooms and covered decks are great places to enjoy those moments when the clouds clear away and the sun comes out unexpectedly.
