If you're thinking of taking a Grand Canyon helicopter tour on or around the Thanksgiving holiday, the time to book it is now.

Most travelers think that demand declines for tours to the Grand Canyon during November, but it's just not the case. Several factors are responsible for this. Here are the main two:

1. Thanksgiving's for travelers. In the past few people ventured to Las Vegas during this holiday. That was until the marketing execs got involved. The goal was to "fill beds" and host conventions. They've done both with a vengeance. In fact, so well that heli trips to the West Rim are often sold out.

The same can be said for Arizona. Folks usually associate November with cold weather in Northern AZ. And it is, but it's not artic by any means. In fact, AZ weather is so "streaky" that you could very well find yourself shedding the jacket and walking about in a long-sleeved shirt. Word got out about this phenomena and in came the visitors.

2. Fewer aircraft are available. In all my years of reporting on the canyon tour industry, this one's always baffled me. Indeed, summer is high season but to cut the available fleet down by as much as they do is remarkable. It's not as bad as it was in past years and I suspect tour operators are grasping the fact that there are now plenty of folks out there who want a heli ride. Let see how it plays out this season.

Having read that, I urge you to consider booking your November heli tour at least a week ahead of time. You'll thank yourself if you do. Why? Because you'll be the person who gets to cherry pick from the best flight times and the most in-demand tours. See, the morning times are the hottest sellers, and, if you wait until the last minute, it's very likely you'll be flying during lunch or early afternoon.

Quick work about departure points.

Canyon helicopters depart from Las Vegas and Tusayan, AZ, gateway to the South Rim. Vegas offers aerial and landing tours while Tusayan offers only aerial tour. The reason for this is that landing tours are banned at the South Rim. Thus if you are flying to the West Rim, consider yourself lucky because it's the only place in the National Park where you can go to the bottom.

As for Vegas landing tours, my favorite is the one that comes with a Champagne Picnic. Seems everyone else likes it, too, because I get inquiries about it all day. That said, if you're the type of traveler who wants it all, consider the tour that goes to the top and the bottom with Skywalk tickets thrown into the mix. Now that's an adventure (and you get to see all that stuff in only 7 hours!).

For me, the South Rim tour that's worth its weight in gold is the 50-minute deluxe flight aboard and EcoStar 130. This one covers nearly 75 percent of the National Park, and, if you are into photography, it's the only way to go because the "Star" has a massive 180-degree wraparound windshield that offers up panoramic views of all the canyon's famous vistas.

Well, that wraps up this article about canyon helicopters and their availability of the Thanksgiving holiday. I hope to see you at the National Park. Until then, have a great flight!
