There are so many different styles available in dining tables today that selecting one can seem like a very overwhelming decision. First you have to consider whether you want to look at formal dining tables or more casual ones. Then you should look at the type of style you want. Even the height of the table is an issue these days because some dining tables are standard height, while others are counter height, which means they have chairs that are taller and more like bar stools with backs on them. Finally, the size and shape of the table should also come into play. Here are some important considerations to make when looking at dining tables.
Style
The very first question you should ask yourself is whether you are looking for casual or formal dining tables. This question also plays directly into the style of what you are looking for. Think about whether you will be using this table on a regular basis or if it will only be reserved for special occasions. Then you should take into consideration the overall style of the other furniture in your home. Look at the trim in the dining room and look for ways to match or complement that trim with the proper dining room table. Also remember to think about what kinds of furniture you have in the rest of your house, especially the way your kitchen cabinets and appliances look. Of course style is always a matter of personal preference, so chances are that the tables which make it to the top of your list will usually fit in quite will with the rest of your home.
Another element of style is the material the table is made out of. Wood, metal, and glass are all very common materials, and they can drastically affect the style of the table. In fact, you may even find yourself gravitating mostly toward tables that are made of certain materials because you prefer the style that they convey. Just remember to account for all of the members of your household when thinking about material. Homes with small children should probably not opt for glass tables.
Size
The next important thing that many people forget to do before they go shopping is measure. There are tables of all sizes available, so it will help to know what kind of measurements you should be looking at. Also take into account how many people will be sitting at the table on a regular basis and how many places you will need for special occasions. Many tables come with a leaf or two, which can be used to make the table larger and accommodate more guests.
Make sure to measure the dimensions of the dining room, also accounting for the space that will be needed to walk around the table, even when the chairs are pulled out. A table that is too large for the space will look completely out of place, even if it matches the style and color of the room perfectly.
Height and Shape
The height of the table is also an important factor to think about. Some people prefer the counter height tables because it does not require as much work on the knees and back to stand up from them. However, other people may have a difficult time getting up into these chairs, especially if they are very short.
When it comes to shape, remember to take your cues from the shape of the room itself. Usually a rectangular room will look best with a rectangular dining table. A square room will look great with either a square table or a round table.
