Here we look at the practical differences why people opt for trays or bleaching compared to the power or laser whitening options.

The tray based system has been around for nearly twenty years as this tends to be a system offered by dental practises as it requires the trays to be moulded in a lab. Customers who opt for this treatment will wait a few days for the trays to be returned from the lab before given their instructions for the whitening program.

At this point the customer then recognises that he or she need to wear the trays in the mouth for a period of fourteen days overnight whilst asleep. Now when you imagine your normal sleep pattern and then imagine sleeping with trays in your mouth! Many customers report that this becomes practically quite challenging and for some customers they will abort the tray based program quite quickly. They are not prepared to compromise their sleep in exchange for whiter teeth.

Another potential issue with the tray based systems is the build up of sensitive teeth which can happen quite quickly. One of the reasons for this is because you are using the trays every day is that the enamel becomes very porous and the additional porous value means the whitening gel is continuing to work inside the enamel and it builds and builds until they eventually become quite deep and aggravate the nerve endings in the dentin and this causes the sensitivity. Now if this starts to happen after day seven of the fourteen day program then again many people then abort the treatment just at a time when it starts to work on the teeth and getting the teeth to a whiter more healthy look.

The last and final potential flaw with the bleaching trays is that during the duration of the fourteen day program you need to be very disciplined in what you come in to contact with. This means a neutral or white diet comprising of no smoking, tea, coffee, red wine, dark vegetables, fruit juices etc and just sticking to water, milk bananas, rice, pasta (no sauces) white fish, chicken etc. So that requires a very disciplined approach particularly if you smoke then it can be impossible not to come in to contact with anything that is likely to re-stain your teeth whilst they are very absorbent to strainers!

However there is good news as the laser whitening system requires only one visit to the whitening practise and unlike the trays the teeth are highly absorbent for only 48 hours not fourteen days.

Lastly there is still a chance of sensitivity but it will be gone within 24 to 36 hours and tends to be less traumatic then with the tray based whitening systems.

Now when you weigh up the hassle and likelihood your investment in time and money will not whiten your teeth why would not just get them treated with power whitening or laser whitening as it takes only 60 minutes to treat and the results are immediate.
