In this modern time, most people, if not all, are becoming well-informed about pain and its management. And together with that growing knowledge about pain is the setback on its costly remedy. One of the many management of pain that is taking the limelight because of its safe, effectiveness and economical characteristic is herbal pain remedy. One of the most commonly used and well-researched herb for pain is the plant Boswellia.

Boswellia is a botanical plant of the Ayurvedic system of health and healing which contains Boswellic acids as its active ingredient. It has been used for a long time to treat pain and inflammation and only in the early 90s that studies were conducted to discover the mechanism and some concrete evidences of this herb benefitting the human health.

How does Boswellia work as an herbal pain remedy? Scientifically, the bodys inflammatory process includes swelling, redness, heat, normal function loss and, the last but not the least, pain. Among these elements of inflammation, pain is the most subjective and generally the most disturbing manifestation of the inflammatory response. Hence, pain associated with inflammation can be relieved by inhibiting the further release of certain chemicals responsible for inflammatory response. Recent studies show that the active ingredient in Boswellia has the capacity to inhibit the stimulation and release of leukotrienes, a chemical substance primarily involved in the inflammation process.

Further studies have also revealed that this medicinal plant has a similar effect with the widely used medication known as Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug or NSAID. This anti-inflammatory quality of Boswellia can significantly help reduce stiffness and aching. Since arthritis is an inflammation of the joints, studies are also being conducted to obtain a strong evidence of Boswellias anti-arthritic property. However, despite the absence of a concluded study, Boswellia is already being used for decades by most people as remedy for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and soft tissue rheumatism.

Another known mechanism of Boswellia as an herbal pain remedy is that it works by stopping the inflammatory enzyme called 5-lipo-oxygenase is the first enzyme or 5-LOX. This specific chemical substance produced in the metabolic pathway which leads to the synthesis of cytokines known as leukotrienes. This mode of action therefore reduces symptoms of the inflammatory process and reduces the further response of the immune system. Another inflammatory enzyme that can be decreased by Boswellic acids is the Human Leukocyte Elastase or HLE. HLE levels, together with leukotriene, are greatly increased during inflammation, certain diseases and allergic reactions. Just 5 years ago, a study demonstrated that this herb also works as an anti-inflammatory agent by correcting the expression of Cytokine Tumor Necrosis Factoralpha, another element in the inflammation process. In fact, a high level of TNF α is one of the responsible enzymes that promote chronic inflammation.

To conclude, there are a number of herbal pain remedies introduced in the market today, yet Boswellia is one of the greatest herbs that have an anti-inflammatory property. As mentioned, minimizing inflammation is significantly helpful in relieving pain.

Boswellia and other herbal pain remedies are available in capsule or tablet forms at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like solaray to ensure quality of the herbal remedy you buy to maintain good health.
