There are many reasons why this lighting method is a better choice than the common and old fashion light bulb, starting from the construction and power of the LED itself and ending with the different forms and colors it comes in.
LEDs are solid-state lamps that use Light-Emitting Diodes as source for the light they produce and this is also where their name comes from. These lamps have been developed for a while now and the process is still going on, making them available in different types, such as conventional semiconductor LEDs, organic ones or polymer type (though the last one is not yet available on the market) and the technology keeps improving.
