Today computers have become an integral part of any organization. Most of the functions in an organization happen on computers to laptops, thus eliminating a lot of manual work. These machines are connected using networks such as wide area network, local area network, intranet, network segments and data communication system.
Day-to-day operation and maintenance of these complex systems is a part of network engineer jobs. Their job starts even before setup of the computer and network system of an organization.
Duties and responsibilities of network engineers:
�Determining organization�s computer system and network needs before installation and setup
�Conducting regular repairs and updates
�Ensuring all systems and network id free from any potential virus or malware
�Collect, analyze and evaluate system data and improve system performance
�Conduct user training
�Run periodic maintenance and security checks
�Manage organization�s servers
�Ensure all work stations work efficiently and stay connected to central network
�Participate in decisions regarding buying of computer and network hardware and software
Work Environment
As most of the industries work on computer and are connected through servers, thus jobs in network engineer field are available in almost all industries. These jobs are mostly concerned with working with computers and in server rooms. These jobs are not full time on-desk jobs, but a mix of both. Most network engineers work full time.
Qualification and Skills required for Network engineers
Education
Network engineer jobs opening are available for candidates with either a bachelor�s degree or a professional certification along with work experience. Since most of these jobs is to work on computers and network a degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering is in demand. They need to have knowledge in networking, computer programming and system design. The openings are dynamic as new technologies keep entering the market; they have to be well updated with latest technology and development.
Skills
Jobs in this field require skills such as analytical skills for evaluating performance and determining changes, communication skills for dealing with many people across the entire organization, problem solving skills for providing quick solutions to network issues and computer skills to competently doing their job.
Payment
Network engineer�s median annual wage in May 2010 was $69,160. Most engineers job demand working overtime. Many organizations also pay overtime allowance to network engineers.
Job Outlook
Jobs of network engineers are expected to rise by 28 percent from 2010 to 2020. These jobs are among the fastest growing jobs in any industry. Demand for these engineers is very high and will continue to grow in the near future as many firms are investing in computer and network technology. Moreover the know-how of this technology requires specific education, which will make this a specialty job.
