The job of a firefighter would have been more difficult if they did not have access to fire fighting equipment like fire detectors, fire hydrant systems, and fire alarm systems or fire sprinkler systems or fire extinguishers and water spray systems. Being a firefighter and doing firefighting jobs is challenging enough and on top of that if the general public is a little aware of installing and using these, it makes things a lot easier for the general life of the community. But providing education to the people on how to use these fire fighting devices is also the responsibility of a firefighter.

A firefighter, apart from extinguishing fires, is also given the responsibility of educating the people in the community by providing education about how to use this equipment. Being a fire fighter entails one to take care of the various functions that come with the tag of being a fire fighter. What are most required are the passion and the perseverance to be a firefighter. Firefighting jobs are based on this simple condition. Without a passion for this profession, you would be bored and worked up about this job. This job is a high pressure one, which means that you would have to be always vigilant and on your toes to face any kind of situations.

A firefighter can only shine in his/her chosen job, if he/she has certain prerequisites like proper training, a clean record, physical ability and perfect eyesight. When you want to take up firefighting jobs, you would have to start early. As early as college, a student can start preparing himself or herself to be a firefighter by taking subjects such as emergency medical aid. This is important because the firefighters are sometimes the first ones to respond to calls of distress and provide immediate medical aid. In most fire training schools, the amount of time or hours that you have to put in are less compared to the semesters that you would take in college.

In firefighting jobs, knowledge about fire technology also goes a long way in making you better at what you do. It shows that you have been preparing seriously for this job role and also shows your commitment towards your profession. This knowledge also protects you from falling prey to any unforeseen accidents in the line of duty too. You should also steer to have a clean record and try not to commit any acts of domestic violence, misdemeanor or other criminal activities. Having a clean record ensures that you become a firefighter and a hero that you wanted to be.

The work of a firefighter is never easy. Other than the physical hazards of the job, it is important to have interpersonal skills too. You will be the first point of contact in these situations, between the victims and their family members, and hence a clear and articulate delivery of instructions is important. At the same time, a firefighter also needs to be accountable and honest in his job. Reporting incidents and preparing a detailed report about the cause of the fire, has to be completed with utmost integrity. A behavioral evaluation of the applicant should show that he is adaptable and can work under duress or stress.

It would be an understatement to say that a firefighter should be physically agile or fit to don his uniform everyday and go out to save lives. The work of a firefighter encompasses rigorous exercise regimen which strives at improving the stamina of the firefighters. Moreover, a fitter firefighter means that he/she can save more lives in a lesser amount of time and also save himself/herself from the face of mortal injuries. Since a firefighter is the emblem of bravery, courage and service, a person with a clean reputation and a good public image will always win the hearts.
