As a plumber, Northampton, I often get asked by family and friends and also through work to give a cost for a new central heating system.
If you are thinking of installing a new heating system and you intend to get a plumber out to give you quotes, it can be helpful to have in your mind a rough idea of what is a reasonable price to spend on a central heating system.
Below is a rough guide to the cost of two types of full central heating systems. The price will vary depending on where in the country you are and on what specific appliance and materials you choose. For example, you can choose which boiler you would like to have installed and these vary in price. A full survey of the property would be required to give an accurate quote. I will give the prices based on an averaged sized 3 bedroom house.
Combination boiler (standard 3 bedroom house)
To fit this system with 8 radiators would cost between �2800 and �3500. This would include Boiler, 8 standard Radiators, Thermostatic rad valves, standard rad valves, Magnetic filter, room programmer and in addition would include all the pipework.
The benifits of a combi boiler is there is no need for a seperate hot water cylinder and you would also have instant hot water on demand. In addition, less space is required for installation and it is cheaper to install, because less materials required.
The negatives are that if your boiler were to break down, you would have no stored hot water. There can also be pressure loss, if more then one hot water tap is used at once and there is also no heating whilst hot water is in use.
System boiler (standard 3 bedroom house)
To fit a system boiler with 8 radiators would cost between �3400 and �4500. This would include boiler, unvented cylinder, 8 standard radiators, Thermostatic radiator valves, standard radiator valves, Expansion vessel + control kit, Magnetic filter, PRV and all pipework.
The benifits of this system is that you will still have stored hot water if the boiler breaks down or the water supply is interrupted. It can supply water to multiple hot water draw of points (Taps) without pressure loss.
The negatives of this system is its more expensive to install due to additional parts and labour and it requires a lot more space for the installation.
So you can see that it is more expensive to fit a system boiler.
When a plumber comes out to give you a quote, the price will also be affected by things like if the plumber will need to lift floorboards or tiling to install your system.
The prices I have given are what you can expect to pay in an average town like where I work as a plumber, in Northampton.
Plumbers in affluent cities such as London may well charge more for their services.
