Flood lights are usually depicted in movies as something ominous. They catch people doing something suspicious, or something they're not supposed to do, and they always turn on at the most inopportune moments. Luckily for consumers, floodlights are not just to catch the bad guys! Flood lights are commonly found in peoples' back yards, and run off an automatic sensor to turn on whenever someone enters the back yard. They're extremely bright and tend to light up the entire back yard, which is great for people who want to let their dogs out in the middle of the night, or those who might hear something alarming. Flood lights are also often seen on sports fields, usually at several points along the field with multiple lights adhering to one fixture.
The most common and well-known flood light is a metal halide, which is the bright white one most people may be familiar with. Next common is a sodium flood light which gives off an orange light, rather than bright white. The sodium flood lights are more akin to street lamps. They're extremely cost effective due to their high lumens-to-watt ratio. With recent technology advancing, LED flood lights are becoming more popular. This is due to their incredible efficiency, and the fact that they become even cheaper than sodium flood lights, long term. The initial cost is greater, but any kind of LED light is automatically eligible for more utility rebates and end up consuming less energy over time.
When using flood lights, it's very important to get the best bang for your buck, as well as making sure they're adequately performing the job they're supposed to. LED lights are a great innovation because of the way they consume energy and release it as light. LED lights are known to be seventy-five percent more efficient than incandescent light bulbs and twenty-five percent more efficient than compact fluorescent light bulbs. While LED light bulbs cost more initially, they wind up being much cheaper in the long run. This is due to a couple factors: many rebates are available for LED lights because of how much greener they are than other forms of lighting; LED lights also waste less energy, and more of what they consume is released as light instead of wasted as heat. Incandescent light bulbs waste ninety percent of their energy as heat. This also allows LED flood lamps to target their light, instead of scattering it over a wide area like other forms of light. This makes it much easier to purchase and set up an LED light and be able to predict what will actually be lit.
LED lights were typically known as those present in remote controls, cell phones, and alarm clocks. However, with recent research and invention, LED lights are becoming more available in different shapes and even colors. This is what is making LED flood lights more common in sporting events, in addition to the fact that they drastically reduce electricity bills as well as increase the comfort of spectators since they release less heat.
