As we age the smile gets darker and discolored and therefore in extreme cases will actually stop people from doing the very thing we should be doing more and that is smiling.
In this article we will try and help you understand about how the teeth get stained and how to get them white again and importantly keep them white.
Things that stain our teeth include the obvious things like tea, coffee, red wine, curries, blackcurrant and just about anything that contains colours and this is impossible really to avoid even things like tomatos and orange juice and therefore the teeth will darken.
Within the tooth we have micro pores and these ducts hold the staining in the form of calcium deposits which darken with age. In fact the change to the teeth should be so slow that it should be unseen until we meet a friend or see an old family picture which makes it apparent how our teeth have darkened and stained.
The good news is that teeth whitening will in most cases recover the teeth back to their natural colour and re-whiten the tooths enamel. This process occurs is a very natural situation and really is the reversing of how the teeth actually get stained in the first place. The whitening gel will open the pores of the enamel and neutralize the staining within the tooth and once this process has finished the results are an improved smile.
If you are young enough and effectively caught the staining in time then you will be able to recover the teeth back to a much whiter condition. If the staining has penetrated the enamel to the dentin then the whitening method considered needs to a professional service like laser, zoom or power whitening or the bleaching trays offered by the dentists.
The light based whitening systems take around one hour and offer instant results once the treatment has finished and for many time conscious people this can be a great attraction to this method.
Tray whitening is slightly more complicated as you have to sleep in the trays overnight and this can cause problems to sleep patterns and also leaves a nasty taste in the mouth when awake.
Another challenge is whether the trays will give you sensitivity which can be quite painful but is only short term and then the teeth return back to normal. When using the trays and sensitivity happens then people tend to stop using them at a time when they are starting to whiten the teeth and this can a disappointment. Now this can still happen with the light based systems but because the treatment time takes one hour then you can generally live with the discomfort and with instant results it is normally worth it!
A smile is free and with a brighter new smile you are likely to attract more opportunities in to your life which can include work, social and even love life. Go one give yourself a smile makeover you deserve it!
