Once you have decided to enter the world of teeth whitening then one of the most popular questions is how long the results will last and teeth stay white and healthy.
What has to be recognised is that teeth are porous and will always remain that way so unless you change your eating habits so dramatically that only white or neutral components enter your mouth then it is obvious the teeth will start to stain over a period of time.
Teeth do not stain in a few weeks or months generally it takes twelve to eighteen months to re-stain but on a sliding scale as the change is slow and the pores of the enamel start retaining the staining.
Depending on whether you opt for bleaching trays or the light based whitening system will change how you manage the ongoing maintenance of your smile. What I mean by this is that by using a maintenance product every few weeks ensures the teeth will stay white and will not wait for the staining to change the colour of the enamel.
For owners of the dentist made trays you can use the system every six to eight weeks for a few hours to remove any residual staining and if this is done regularly then the teeth will stay white all year round.
For the time precious people then having a top up of the laser system every twelve or twenty four months will do the same and keep the teeth looking white and healthy.
The home kits are a useful tool for regular maintenance when it comes to teeth whitening as they are cheap and offer an instant solution plus there is plenty of options available. Teeth whitening strips are very popular and work quite well at removing the external type staining which is what is required as a maintenance tool. If used once every few weeks the whitening strips will offer a decent option as they are easy to use and relatively cheap.
Another important factor is how porous the teeth are. Some individuals have the type of teeth that simply absorb easier than others and this means for those individuals an ongoing maintenance program is essential to keep the teeth white otherwise their teeth will slip back to their original colour much quicker.
Teeth whitening is similar to weight loss in that you have to keep working on it and for some individuals this can be worse than others. We need to look at teeth whitening as ongoing part of our lifestyle and this way we keep the teeth looking great all year round without panicking when the teeth have changed to a yellow or brownish colour.
Having your teeth whitened regularly does not hurt your teeth or gums but always seek the consent of your dentist and you should always maintain regular appointments with the dentist and hygienist to ensure your teeth are healthy and that will help the teeth stay white and healthy.
So to recap teeth whitening needs to be looked at as ongoing process not just a quick treatment.
